Egyptian Theatre

DeKalb, United States

The Egyptian Theatre is a historic performance and movie venue situated in the heart of downtown Boise, Idaho, at the intersection of Capitol Boulevard and Main Street. This iconic theatre has served as a cultural hub for the city since its inception and has undergone several name changes and restorations over the years. The Egyptian Theatre first opened its doors on April 19, 1927, with a screening of the film "Don Juan." Throughout the decades, it has been known by various names, reflecting its changing roles and ownership. In the 1930s, it was referred to as the Fox, in the 1940s as the ADA, and it reclaimed its original name, the Egyptian, in the late 1970s. It stands as the last remaining single-screen theatre in downtown Boise. One of the most significant milestones in the theatre's history was the restoration project in 1999, which was commissioned by the Hardy Foundation, Inc. Gregory A. Kaslo, AIA, served as the project architect for this endeavor. The restoration aimed to preserve the theatre's unique Egyptian architectural motifs and improve its facilities to accommodate modern performances and events. Today, the Egyptian Theatre is a versatile venue that hosts a wide array of events, including concerts, opera performances, guest speakers, film festivals, and movie premieres. It is also equipped to support various functions such as business conferences, weddings, private parties, corporate events, and benefits, offering technology for 35mm and 70mm film projections, as well as BluRay and DVD formats. The theatre is renowned for its exquisite attention to detail, particularly the Egyptian architectural elements that give it its distinctive character. The auditorium's main feature is the proscenium, adorned with gilded detailing. A prominent winged scarab, a symbol of rebirth and the sun, is positioned above the cornice torus within a painted geometric star motif panel. This ornamentation is complemented by flanking horizontal reed bundles with swan-like figures set on stylized water, all centered above the stage. The outer proscenium arch is supported by engaged columns resting on three corbels at each side. The Egyptian Theatre's acoustics contribute to an exceptional concert-going experience, and its rich history and lovingly restored environment make it one of Boise's most cherished landmarks. It continues to attract top-level national touring acts and theatre productions, preserving its legacy as a cornerstone of Boise's cultural and entertainment scene.
