This concert is a competition for young musicians! The program features three groups of high school musicians, each of whom is a finalist in the Elmhurst Symphony Orchestra's 2025 annual Stanger Young Artist Competition.

Rising stars of stanger

George Gershwin is the American composer who dressed Jazz in a tuxedo and took it to symphony concert halls around the world. This concert opens with Gershwin’s musical depiction of Paris in the roaring 20s, including honking taxi cabs!

Brass Brilliance

Like many of his contemporaries, French composer Claude Debussy often found musical revelations in the sights and sounds of far-off and foreign locales. Spain proved to be a veritable fountain of such exotic inspiration: Debussy’s Ibéria is full of flamenco-flavored tunes and brilliant colors, and pairs best with a bottle of Tempranillo — cheers!

2024 marks the 200th anniversary of the birth of Austrian composer Anton Bruckner. A remarkably humble composer (a leading music critic at the time called him “half genius, half simpleton”), he is best known for his symphonies and sacred music.

2024 will mark the 200th birthday of Austrian composer and organist Anton Bruckner! An exceptional figure known for his symphonies and sacred music, Bruckner’s works are punctuated with expansive, organ-like walls of sound. This winter, the Apollo Chorus of Chicago will be joined by the Elmhurst Symphony Orchestra in presenting Bruckner’s Psalm 150, Te Deum and several motets.

Majestic Bruckner

Jean-Baptiste Lully was a French composer, conductor, and dancer who worked in the court of Louis the XIV. Despite his venerable status as an artist, Lully is perhaps best known for his death: He struck himself in the foot with a long conducting staff (this was before conductors waived batons, and instead would keep the orchestra in time by banging a large staff on the floor) and subsequently died of the infected wound.

Carl Maria von Weber, a contemporary of Beethoven, was one of the founders of musical Romanticism (music which favors powerful expressions of emotion, often the emotions of the composers themselves). As a kind of musical father figure, von Weber inspired and influenced an entire generation of composers — including the other composers featured on this program.
