A Symphony of Seasons: Richmond's Musical Odyssey

Majestic in its scope. Dazzling in its sound. There is nothing to match the experience of hearing, live in concert, The Planets. Be there for the ultimate trip through the galaxy as Richmond Symphony and Valentina Peleggi perform Gustav Holst’s sonic celestial showpiece. Plus, the suite from John Williams’ Star Wars. Also featured on this final concert of a season, exploring 250 years of American music and history, is a world premiere from composer and storyteller Stacy Garrop, commissioned from her by the Richmond Symphony.

In composing his epic, moving Requiem, Damien Geter was inspired by those composed earlier by Mozart, Berlioz, Brahms, and especially Verdi. Within the traditional Latin text, Geter’s Requiem weaves the words of victims of lynching and of those who dared speak out. “A Requiem memorializes a person,” Geter has stated. “We need to memorialize these folks in some way, to keep their names alive. And this is the way I choose to honor them.”

It is a work of such imposing power, that no music can dare to match it in its scope and glory. The Richmond Symphony, Chorus and soloists, all under Valentina Peleggi, present the concert experience of a lifetime: the dramatic majesty of Giuseppe Verdi’s awe-inspiring Requiem.

It’s Richmond’s favorite holiday music tradition. Celebrate with family and friends on Thanksgiving weekend! Hear your Richmond Symphony and Richmond Symphony Chorus perform carols, classics, and sparkling holiday favorites, with a special visit from Soul Santa. Richmond’s own, Desirée Roots, joins on vocals! With special appearances from the Greater Richmond’s Children Choir and the James River Ringers.

In 1934, William Dawson imagined a symphony that would fuse African rhythms and American laments into the symphonic form. What Dvořák’s “New World” Symphony promised, Dawson delivered. His defiant, triumphant “Negro Folk Symphony” is the greatest symphony you’ve never heard, premiered by no less than Stokowski and the Philadelphia Orchestra to thunderous acclaim. Also, the world premiere of Adolphus Hailstork’s 2nd Piano Concerto “The Peaceable Kingdom”, written for Lara Downes. And Chia-Hsuan Lin joins Valentina Peleggi for a two-conductor meditation by Roxanna Panufnik.

A concert experience unlike any other. Valentina Peleggi leads the Richmond Symphony, Chorus, and soloists in Mahler’s monumental Symphony Number Two. The awe-inspiring “Resurrection” Symphony is a not-to-be-missed concert event. Music by George Walker begins the program.
