The Egyptian Theatre is a historic performance venue located in Boise, Idaho, at the intersection of Capitol Boulevard and Main Street. Established as a center for the arts and entertainment, the theatre has been an integral part of Boise's cultural scene since its opening on April 19, 1927, with the film "Don Juan." Throughout its history, the Egyptian Theatre has undergone several name changes, reflecting the evolving nature of its role within the community. In the 1930s, it was known as the Fox, in the 1940s as the ADA, and it reclaimed its original name, the Egyptian, in the late 1970s. It stands as the last remaining single-screen theatre in downtown Boise, a testament to its enduring legacy. The theatre's architecture and design are a nod to its namesake, featuring exquisite Egyptian-style architectural detailing that has been lovingly restored to its original splendor. The restoration, which took place in 1999, was commissioned by the Hardy Foundation, Inc., with Gregory A. Kaslo, AIA, serving as the project architect. This refurbishment ensured that the Egyptian Theatre would continue to serve as a beloved landmark for generations to come. The venue's proscenium is a standout feature, adorned with gilded detailing that captures the essence of Egyptian artistry. A prominent winged scarab, a symbol of rebirth and the rising sun, dominates the space above the cornice torus, set within a geometric star motif panel. This is complemented by horizontal reed bundles and swan-like figures, evoking the imagery of Egyptian mythology and iconography. The Egyptian Theatre is not only a feast for the eyes but also for the ears, boasting acoustics that create an exceptional experience for concert-goers. It is a versatile space, available for a variety of events including performing arts, movie screenings, concerts, opera performances, guest speakers, film festivals, and movie premieres. The theatre is also equipped to support a range of other functions, such as business conferences, weddings, private parties, corporate events, and benefits, with facilities to accommodate 35mm, BluRay, DVD, and even 70mm presentations. As one of Boise's most cherished historical landmarks, the Egyptian Theatre continues to play a pivotal role in the city's cultural life, hosting numerous top-level national touring acts and theatre productions. Its unique blend of historical significance, architectural beauty, and modern functionality ensures that the Egyptian Theatre remains a cornerstone of Boise's downtown area, beloved by residents and visitors alike.
