Michael Arceneaux is a Houston-bred, Howard-educated writer and author. His first book, I Can’t Date Jesus, was just released on July 24, 2018 from Atria Books/Simon & Schuster. Additionally, he is a regular contributor to outlets such Essence, Complex, The Root, and Into, among others. Moreover, he’s written for the New York Times, the Washington Post, Rolling Stone, Teen Vogue, NBCTHINK, Wired, Buzzfeed, The Guardian, Mic, Esquire, Time Ideas, Vulture, Salon, The Atlantic, Comedy Central Online, among others. He writes about race, sexuality, politics, religion, and Beyoncé.

Kobie Boykins became an engineer because he wanted to be “that guy who figures out how to design and build things to function at their highest level.”  Well, he’s succeeded. Kobie is a principal mechanical engineer at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) in Pasadena, California, where he has worked since graduating from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. In more than twenty-five years at the lab, he has worked on every Mars mission since the Pathfinder mission, which took the first Rover, “Sojourner,” to Mars in 1996.  Later, Kobie designed the solar arrays that powered the Mars Exploration Rovers, “Spirit” and “Opportunity.” Those Rovers landed in 2004 and were expected to perform for 90 days, but they lived for six years and fourteen years, respectively, sending images and data back to Earth and discovering that the surface of Mars once held water.

MOSTLY KOSHER, the acclaimed Klezmer/Rock band, radically reconstructs Judaic and American cultural music through ravenous klezmer beats and arresting Yiddish refrains. Mostly Kosher is a musical feast that explodes into a global food-fight of Jazz, Latin, Rock, and Folk. In response to the poetry and folk music of Judaic roots, their original voice resounds with themes of social justice, human dignity, and mutual understanding.  Led by frontman Leeav Sofer, one of Jewish Journal’s "30 under 30" most accomplished professionals in the Los Angeles Jewish diaspora, Mostly Kosher is comprised of some of the highest regarded Los Angeles musicians: violinist Janice Mautner Markham, drummer Eric Hagstrom, bassist Adam Levy, accordionists Gee Rabe and Nigel Wilson, trombonist Bob Lawrence, and Ben Tevik on clarinet and sax. Longtime collaborators also include Aníbal Seminario, Taylor Covey and Will Brahm.

Award-winning pianist Michelle Cann makes her Des Moines debut performing of George Gershwin’s iconic Rhapsody in Blue, celebrating its 100th Anniversary in 2024. The concert opens with Grammy-nominated composer Carlos Simon’s Gospel-inspired Amen! The soaring lyricism and brooding intensity of César Franck’s Symphony in D Minor brings the concert to a close.

Amanda Wingfield is a faded, tragic remnant of Southern gentility who lives in poverty in a dingy St. Louis apartment with her son, Tom, and her daughter, Laura. Amanda strives to give meaning and direction to her life and the lives of her children, though her methods are ineffective and irritating. Tom is driven nearly to distraction by his mother's nagging and seeks escape in alcohol and the world of the movies. Laura also lives in her illusions. She is crippled, and this defect, intensified by her mother's anxiety to see her married, has driven her more and more into herself. The crux of the action comes when Tom invites a young man of his acquaintance to take dinner with the family. Jim, the caller, is a nice ordinary fellow who is at once pounced upon by Amanda as a possible husband for Laura. In spite of her crude and obvious efforts to entrap the young man, he and Laura manage to get along very nicely, and momentarily Laura is lifted out of herself into a new world. But this crashes when, toward the end, Jim explains that he is already engaged. The world of illusion that Amanda and Laura have striven to create in order to make life bearable collapses about them. Tom, too, at the end of his tether, at last leaves home.
