Chapel Street Players

Newark, DE, United States

The Chapel Street Players (CSP), originally known as the University Drama Group (UDG), is a community theater organization with a rich history dating back to its inception in 1934. Founded as a dramatic club by 35 faculty members and staff of the University of Delaware, the group's mission was to provide live entertainment for the university community as well as the greater Newark area. With the completion of Mitchell Hall in 1930, the UDG had the opportunity to stage its productions under favorable conditions, debuting with the full-length comedy "Mrs. Bumstead Leigh" in the spring of 1935. The inclusion of townspeople in 1936 marked a significant expansion for the group, a move that was considered innovative at the time and subsequently emulated by other drama organizations in college towns. Despite a close relationship with the E 52 University players, the UDG maintained its distinct identity, often exchanging actors between the two groups. During World War II, the UDG produced a variety of soldier shows for servicemen stationed at the nearby Navy base in Bainbridge, Maryland. By 1965, the group's membership had grown to over 150, prompting the initiation of annual June fundraisers. A notable figure during this period was Howard Kuscher, who spearheaded the introduction of theater-in-the-round performances in a barn provided by members Sally and Sigurd Anderson. The search for a permanent home for the UDG culminated in the acquisition of a church on Chapel Street in 1969, after a series of fundraising efforts and the successful negotiation of a mortgage. This property was transformed into the Chapel Street Playhouse, which officially opened its doors with a production in November 1970. The theater underwent various renovations and improvements over the years, including the addition of a light and sound booth, stage extensions, and upgrades to seating and facilities. The CSP has been a vibrant part of the community, hosting a variety of productions including the subscription series, the annual June fundraiser, one-act plays, and special performances. It has also been a competitive force in One Act Festivals, earning numerous awards and honors. The theater is recognized for its technical excellence and the dedication of its volunteers, as evidenced by the technical services award plaque named in honor of Marion Kuscher. Today, the Chapel Street Players continue to provide a platform for local talent and offer an array of theatrical experiences to the community. The organization remains incorporated under its original name, University Drama Group, and is known for its commitment to the arts and the spirit of volunteerism that drives its success.
