Delaware County Symphony

Newtown Square, United States

The Delaware County Symphony (DCS) is a renowned symphonic organization with a rich history dating back to its establishment in 1971. Initially known as the Media Community Symphony, the orchestra underwent a significant transformation when it changed its name to the Delaware County Symphony. In 1975, the DCS expanded by merging with the Springfield Sinfonietta, and the following year, Roman Pawlowski was appointed as the music director of the newly combined group. For several years, the DCS operated under the auspices of the Delaware County Community College. However, in 1987, the symphony made a strategic move to the Life Center at Neumann College, now known as Neumann University, located in Aston, Pennsylvania. The leadership of the DCS has seen several changes over the decades. After a long tenure, Mr. Pawlowski retired in 2010, and Jeremy Gill took over the baton. Dr. Gill's relocation to Boston in 2013 led to Tim Ribchester stepping in as interim music director until 2015. The position was then filled by Joseph Caminiti in 2016, who served until his resignation in 2019. The current music director, Sebastian Grand, was appointed in 2021, bringing a new era of artistic direction to the DCS. Throughout its history, the Delaware County Symphony has showcased its musical talents at various esteemed regional venues. These include the Kimmel Center Perelman Theater, Wilmington Grand Opera House, Philadelphia Museum of Art, Media Theatre, and Rose Tree Park. Besides large-scale symphonic concerts, the DCS has also engaged with the community by providing small ensemble performances at local places of worship, parks, and commercial establishments. In 1988, the DCS was formally incorporated as a non-profit corporation, reflecting its commitment to serving the community through music. The governance of the organization is entrusted to a Board of Directors, comprising individuals who are both part of the symphony orchestra and from the wider community. This structure ensures a broad representation and inclusive approach to managing the symphony's affairs. The Delaware County Symphony's dedication to musical excellence and community engagement has made it a pillar of the cultural landscape in the region, with a history that continues to resonate with audiences and musicians alike.
