The Fort Collins Symphony (FCS) is the oldest arts organization and the only professional symphonic orchestra in Larimer County, Northern Colorado. Established in 1923 as the Fort Collins Concert Orchestra by Editha Todd Leonard, it initially consisted of volunteer college students, teachers, and community members. The orchestra underwent significant transformation under the leadership of Maestro Will Schwartz, a Juilliard School graduate, who took the helm in 1949. Schwartz's tenure saw the orchestra grow in talent and reputation, laying the groundwork for its enduring legacy. In 1950, the Fort Collins Symphonic Society, now known as the Fort Collins Symphony Association, was incorporated to provide organizational support. The Women’s Guild, later renamed the Friends of the Symphony, was established in 1963 to assist with fundraising and special events. The Symphony has been under the direction of several executive directors, with Mary Kopco serving since February 2015. After Schwartz stepped down in 1999, the baton was passed to Fusao Kajima and, subsequently, to Wes Kenney in 2003. Kenney, an award-winning conductor, has since broadened the Symphony's reach through collaborations with CSU’s Department of Music, Theatre, and Dance, and other cultural organizations. Today, the Fort Collins Symphony is celebrated as a cornerstone of Northern Colorado's cultural landscape, known for its exceptional music performances, innovative outreach programs, and commitment to artistic excellence. With a vision to expand its audience and achieve national recognition, the Symphony continues to inspire and engage the community, building upon a rich tradition of musical excellence.
