The essential thing about each that makes it so appealing–bodies moving in space, sounds moving in time–is nonverbal, even anti-verbal. So it’s hard to express in words what matters most about sports or music, one reason why both subjects attract so much cliché and inspire other sorts of expressive response, like high fives and dancing.

The notion of role responsibility plays a crucial role in professional ethics. Despite extensive discussions on role responsibility in fields such as medicine, engineering, business, journalism, and law, the exploration of this notion in the context of the classical music profession remains largely uncharted. This is surprising, especially given the significant attention that the concept of musical performance has received in recent decades. However, there is at least one crucial reason for this neglect. Compared to standard examples of occupations that bestow professional status (such as law, medicine, and engineering), music is a much more controversial case. This prompts a compelling question: can music truly be considered a profession?

The University of Tulsa Symphony Orchestra begins its 2023-2024 concert season with a performance celebrating the beginning of Homecoming Week. TU Professor Richard Wagner will conduct the orchestra in the suite from Pelléas and Mélisande by Gabriel Fauré, the overture to “The Wasps” by Vaughan Williams and an overture by Mikhail Glinka. TU alum and current adjunct professor Joshua Lowery will guest conduct music by Aaron Copland.

The TU Vocal and Choral Camp is a five-day summer camp for high school-aged singers who love vocal and choral music. TU vocal faculty along with guest artists will guide students in the preparation of classical solos appropriate for auditions and contests in daily private lessons and masterclasses. The choral portion will feature literature specially selected for the camp and will include preparation of the All-State High School Mixed Choir audition repertoire for the coming year.

TU Jazz Camp is a week-long day camp open to all music students (instrumental and vocal), ninth grade through college, with all levels of skills and experience. The educational focus of the camp will be based on a curriculum encompassing jazz theory and ear training, jazz improvisation, jazz history, jazz performance (big band, combo, guitar ensemble, vocal) and group lessons and master classes. Auditions Sunday, July 9, 2023. Camp July 9-15, 2023.

TU Jazz Camp

TU Summer Band Camp will focus primarily on large concert band repertoire and performance. In addition to the full concert band, the band will be divided into chamber groups by instrument or instrumental family depending on available camp instrumentation (woodwind ensemble, brass ensemble, flute choir, clarinet choir, trumpet choir, percussion ensemble, etc.). This annual two-week day band camp is open to students entering ninth grade through graduated high school seniors.

Open to intermediate to advanced level piano students in grades 9-12. Students will work with TU piano faculty and attend seminars, workshops and presentations designed to equip pianists with the necessary skills for a career in music or to simply enrich their lives through music performance and informed listening.

Join Angela Ray for a short concert consisting of four songs interspersed with commentary exploring the relationship between literature and the history of Black women’s music in America. From Elizabeth Taylor Greenfield, a singer celebrated as the “Black Swan” in the nineteenth century, to spirituals, opera, jazz, soul and pop, Ray’s presentation will showcase the powerful storytelling that music enables.

The University of Tulsa Symphony Orchestra will conclude its 2023 performance season with the President’s Concerto-Aria Concert. The concert will feature the TU Concerto-Aria winners:  Trisha Dunlevy, piano, performing the first movement of the Piano Concerto of Edvard Grieg; and Jennifer Ripley, cello, performing the first movement of the Dvorak Cello Concerto. Conductor Richard Wagner will also lead the orchestra in music by Tchaikovsky and the Carmen Suite No. 1 by Bizet.

The Stan Kenton Legacy Orchestra tours and performs many of the famous works of the great Stan Kenton Orchestra as well as new big band compositions and arrangements created in the Kenton style. This TU performance launches their national tour. The concert is free, but tickets are required.

Today, defending the idea of free Ukraine has taken on profound urgency, and Ukrainian musicians have been battling tirelessly on the musical front. As the war of Russian aggression grinds on in Ukraine, one of the strongest vectors for strengthening and even expanding Ukrainian cultural identity has been viral musical moments, which have coined, recycled and rejuvenated anthems and slogans into markers of patriotism and resistance. But this centrality of music to the definition of post-Soviet Ukrainianness is nothing new: in her award-winning book Wild Music: Sound and Sovereignty in Ukraine, Maria Sonevytsky tracked discourses of belonging in Ukrainian popular music—from the Eurovision Song Contest to reality TV, from Indigenous radio to the revolution stage—during the volatile decade of Ukrainian political history bracketed by the 2004 and 2014 revolutions. In his The Humorless Ladies of Border Control: Touring the Punk Underground from Belgrade to Ulanbaatar, a New York Times “Best Travel Book of 2021,” musician and writer Franz Nicolay explored the complexities of politics and idealism in the DIY and punk communities of the post-Communist world. Acclaimed poet and translator Boris Dralyuk will host a wide-ranging discussion (and musical performance) on the sonic messages which launch out as—in the words of “ethno-chaos” band DakhaBrakha—”musical ambassadors from free Ukraine.” Option to attend virtually or in person.

In the late 1980s, the Soviet Ukrainian punk subculture seeded an accidental politics that allowed for new and idiosyncratic ways to identify as Ukrainian. In this talk, the anthropologist and musician Maria Sonevytsky will share her research on a curious cassette album that circulated in the last years of the USSR on the streets of Kyiv: Tantsi (Dances), by the punk quartet Vopli Vidopliassova (known by fans as VV). Using Tantsi as the center of her analysis, Sonevytsky will discuss the band’s irreverent hit songs, their uses of irony to battle the Soviet state’s hypocrisy (and to circumvent the censors), the punk scene’s awakening to new forms of belonging to the project of Ukraine, and the stakes of all of this in the context of the ongoing Russian war of aggression against Ukraine. For almost two decades, Chicago-based musician and classics degree-holder Joe Goodkin has toured the United States. Recently, Goodkin has created a 17-song adaptation of the Iliad steeped in ancient and modern war literature. He plays his music at VA hospitals as part of recreational therapy for veterans experiencing PTSD and other related war traumas. Goodkin’s first-person songs capture the horror, grief and love that permeate the Iliad and the combat experience. Sung from the perspective of Achilles, Priam, Patroklus, Briseis, Helen, Andromache and more, The Blues of Achilles evokes “the truths that the Iliad conveys [through] songs that [are] real and now” in the words of Tom Palaima, Robert M. Armstrong Centennial Professor of Classics at The University of Texas at Austin.

Welsh baritone Jeremy Huw Williams and his collaborative pianist, Paula Fan, will present a recital of music by English, American and Welsh composers. The program will celebrate the 150th birthday of Ralph Vaughan Williams with his well-known cycle, Songs of Travel, and will also include Four Songs After Women Poets by Professor Joseph Rivers. The concert will conclude with Three Welsh Folk Song Arrangements by Benjamin Britten.

Begin Homecoming Week with a University of Tulsa Symphony Orchestra performance in the Lorton Performance Center’s Gussman Concert Hall. The concert will feature Coronation from the ballet suite The Exiles Return in honor of retiring TU composer Joseph Rivers; Overture to The Magic Flute by Mozart; and music by J.S. Bach and Gustav Holst. TU Professor Richard Wagner will conduct.

The University of Tulsa Chamber Orchestra will perform with Ron Pearson, TU organ professor and director of music ministries at First Presbyterian Church in downtown Tulsa, in the First Presbyterian Sanctuary. J. Donald Feagin Professor of Music and Film Studies Joseph Rivers, Ph.D., will present “Dreams, Elegies and Cat Fights,” a concert of his music in Gussman Concert Hall at the Lorton Performance Center. The concert will include original instrumental and vocal music and will feature a performance of Every Man’s Land, commissioned by Kathryn LaFortune, Ph.D., based on a World War I poem found in her grandfather’s diary. It will be performed by the St. John’s Chamber Choir, directed by Zachary Malavolti, Ph.D. A reception will follow the concert in the Lorton Performance Center lobby.
