American classical music has long been indebted to the European tradition. This concert features European composers that had major influence on the American music scene.

Antonín Dvorák lived was the head of the first music conservatory in the United States, encouraging American composers to use folk music to create a national style. Ernst Bloch was the president of Cleveland Institute of Music and San Francisco Conservatory, while composing his distinctive music. Amy Beach, the lone American composer on the program, was educated in the European tradition while studying at the New England Conservatory

Ives, like the other composers on this program, used the folk music of his local region in his compositions. You’ll hear Ives’ use of the hymn in his fourth violin sonata, Boccherini’s use of Spanish folk songs, Bartók’s use of Hungarian folk tunes, and Brahms’s use of Romani music.

In celebration of its 50th anniversary, the Yale Institute of Sacred Music will hold an ecumenical hymn festival in Woolsey Hall on May 5, 2024, at 4 p.m. A community choir of 300 voices will sing hymns around the theme “All Creation Sings,” celebrating the diversity of our creation and our duty as faithful people to care for it. Conducted by Dr. Felicia Barber, the choir will have Yale Camerata at its core and will be accompanied by brass ensemble, gospel instrumentalists, and organists Dr. Nathaniel Gumbs and Dr. Bruce Neswick. Drs. Barbara Brown Taylor and James Forbes will be the special guest preachers.

The Mass in B Minor by Johann Sebastian Bach is considered an all-embracing musical masterpiece created by Bach at the pinnacle of his remarkable career. Beginning with the awe-inspiring Kyrie and ending with the jubilant Dona nobis pacem, there are nine completely unique arias and duets, fourteen impressive ensemble sections for four, five, six, and even eight voices, a broad spectrum of instrumental solos, and an incredible variety of styles.
