The Yale School of Music (YSM), established in 1894, is a graduate professional school within Yale University, dedicated to preparing exceptional students for careers in music. The school traces its roots to 1854 when Joseph Battell funded music instruction at Yale, leading to the appointment of Gustave Jacob Stoeckel as the first music professor. Over the years, YSM has expanded its programs and facilities, including the establishment of the Yale Collection of Musical Instruments in 1900 and the construction of Woolsey Hall in 1901. Notable milestones include the creation of the graduate division in 1932, the establishment of the Yale Summer School of Music/Norfolk Chamber Music Festival in 1939, and the introduction of new graduate degrees in 1968. The school has been led by distinguished deans, with José García-León currently serving as the Henry and Lucy Moses Dean of Music. YSM is known for its rigorous programs, world-class faculty, and significant contributions to the field of music education and performance.
