Denver Choruses

Denver, CO, United States

The Denver Choruses, comprising the Denver Gay Men's Chorus (DGMC) and the Denver Women's Chorus (DWC), are esteemed musical ensembles with a rich history of creative expression and advocacy. Both choruses operate under the auspices of the Rocky Mountain Arts Association (RMAA), a not-for-profit organization dedicated to supporting the lives and well-being of LGBTQIA individuals. Founded in 1982, the Denver Gay Men's Chorus emerged as a pioneering voice for the gay community, offering a safe and supportive environment for artistic expression. The chorus has since grown into a 135-member ensemble, recognized as a leading gay performing arts organization in the Rocky Mountain Region. Over its 41-year history, DGMC has performed more than 300 concerts and has been a catalyst for change, using musical excellence to entertain, educate, inspire, and empower audiences while promoting acceptance and tolerance. The Denver Women's Chorus was established two years later, in 1984. With origins in the lesbian community, DWC has evolved into a trans- and nonbinary-inclusive chorus that includes LGBTQIA and allied singers. The multigenerational treble chorus is committed to musical excellence, community building, and advocating for social justice. DWC's 130 voices unite to promote progressive social change through their performances, embracing diversity, equity, and intersectional feminism. Both choruses are deeply involved in using the transformative power of music to address and educate on LGBTQ history and issues. They have been part of various significant events, including a candlelight vigil at Cheesman Park after the Pulse nightclub shooting in 2016 and the commemoration of the 50th Anniversary of the Stonewall Riots. Furthermore, the DWC presented the Colorado premiere of "Lifting As We Climb" in 2020, a piece honoring the 100th anniversary of the 19th amendment. Beyond performances, the Denver Choruses engage in activism and community outreach, such as anti-bullying programs in schools and advocating for LGBTQIA rights in the face of political challenges and divisive rhetoric. The choruses' commitment to fostering understanding and acceptance extends beyond the concert hall, positioning them at the intersection of art and activism. For those interested in supporting the Denver Choruses, there are opportunities to donate, audition, buy tickets, and learn more about their events and initiatives through their website. The RMAA also invites community members to join their email list, explore job opportunities, and consider hiring the choruses for events. In summary, the Denver Choruses, through the RMAA, have established themselves as vibrant forces for community engagement and social change, using the power of choral music to unite and inspire across the greater Denver area and beyond.
