The John E. N. and Dede Howard Department of Music offers a select number of students the opportunity of performing on world class instruments from the Hough Collection, as members of the Joy String Quartet. A gift from David and Bonnie Joy Hough in 2022, these exceptional instruments are pieces of historical significance crafted by Italian master luthiers from Cremona and Turin during the 17th, 18th and 19th centuries.

Now, the Reduced Shakespeare Company tackles the subject it was born to reduce. From the high-brow to the low, The Complete History of Comedy (abridged) covers comedy through the ages, from Aristophanes and Shakespeare and Moliere (Is Moliere funny? Why not?) to Vaudeville and Charlie Chaplin to The Daily Show and Anthony Weiner.

Hillsdale welcomes Stanislav Ioudenitch, Gold Medal winner of the 11th Van Cliburn International Piano Competition and renowned for his playing and teaching throughout the world, and rising star Maria Ioudenitch, winner of the Ysaÿe International Music Competition, the Tibor Varga International Violin Competition, and the Joseph Joachim International Competition.  This father-daughter concert showcases the richness and beauty of French repertoire, with works by Ravel, Boulanger, Poulenc, and Franck.

A new artistic impulse that emphasized extreme emotions and sublime moments emerged around 1770 that is prominently exhibited in the instrumental works of C. P. E. Bach and Joseph Haydn, and became the defining aesthetic of the German dramatic and poetic “Sturm und Drang” (“Storm and Stress”) movement, exemplified by the early writings of Johann Wolfgang von Goethe. The Hillsdale 18th-Century Chamber Orchestra’s second salon of the semester features symphonies by Haydn and C. P. E. Bach, interspersed with portions of Goethe’s The Sorrows of Young Werther and other emotionally charged literature from the period that parallel the emotive poignancy of the music.

Vox GR’s 2023 - 2024 Season opens with An Old Belief, a concert anchored around Hubert Parry’s similarly titled piece from his set Songs of Farewell. The program explores the themes of loss and reunification, “That Old Time Religion,” and “A Tale as Old as Time - Love.” Renaissance gems and pieces from the “Seashores of Old Mexico” fill out this varied program which is offered at Central Reformed Church of Grand Rapids and in the Hillsdale College Chapel in Hillsdale, Michigan.

Craig Cramer will perform works by Bach, Buxtehude, Zahnbrecher, and Reger on the Paul Fritts & Co. organs in Christ Chape. Cramer was Professor of Organ at the University of Notre Dame for thirty-nine years until his retirement in 2020, and for the past two years was Visiting Professor of Organ at Yale University.

Home salons and coffee house gatherings were lively and invigorating social events in many cities in 18th-century Europe. People gathered to hear new and old music, read poetry and play excerpts, and discuss the latest scientific, political, and artistic news. The Hillsdale 18th-Century Chamber Orchestra and faculty guests from across campus invite you to hear the music of J. S. Bach and Georg Philippe Telemann as part of a salon experience, and hopefully compel you to consider why Don Quixote’s popularity and influence may have been as prominent in the mid-1700s as it is today.

A concert of original transcriptions of J.S. Bach by Andrew Balio, principal trumpet of the Baltimore Symphony and the founder of the Future Symphony Institute.  Bach affirmed that "the aim and final end of all music should be none other than the glory of God and the refreshment of the soul."  Balio and organist Bruce Bengtson partner in an evening of this enduring, spiritual music.
