The ALEX Theatre, originally opened as the Alexander Theater on September 4, 1925, began as a Vaudeville house and movie palace. Throughout the 1920s to 1950s, it served as a preview house for major Hollywood studio films, attracting stars such as Elizabeth Taylor and Charlie Chaplin. In 1940, the theater added its iconic Art Deco neon tower and marquee, and its name was shortened to Alex. After screening blockbuster films for six decades, the theater ceased operations in 1991. The Glendale Redevelopment Agency purchased and rehabilitated the Alex Theatre in 1992, reopening it as a performing arts and entertainment center on New Year's Eve 1993. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1996. Under the artistic direction of Miles Williams, the ALEX Theatre has been transformed into a venue for diverse and independent artists, hosting performances from around the world. EVNSONG Entertainment, founded by Williams, has played a pivotal role in this transformation, curating a wide range of events including international music, film festivals, ballet, modern dance, comedy, and orchestral music. The ALEX Theatre is now celebrated for its inclusive and community-driven approach, providing a stage for "misfit shows" cherished by the diverse audiences of greater Los Angeles.
