Sergei Prokofiev‘s Peter and the Wolf tells the story of a young boy living with his grandfather in a forest clearing, and the adventure he and his animal friends have when a wolf comes through the garden gate. Written as a child’s introduction to the orchestra, each character is represented by a different instrument or group of instruments and features the full orchestra and a narrator to bring to life this classic tale.

Mini Maestros is designed especially for children ages 2-8 and their families. Each concert highlights a different family of orchestra instruments with curriculum prepared by Early Childhood Learning experts. Educator and emcee Shay Ryan introduces the instruments and musical concepts while Symphony Tacoma musicians demonstrate by playing songs that get kids singing, dancing, clapping their hands–and learning!

After a year of working on preparing a completely American music program for our tour to Portugal and Spain, the Symphony Tacoma Voices turns our musical interest to global music, and globally inspired music from our region. We will perform works composed for our world’s finest choirs as we celebrate traditions and musical styles from around the world. We will also feature music that demonstrates how music from around the globe influences American music.

Music For A Blue Planet

Samuel Coleridge-Taylor’s classical compositions were influenced by traditional African music, reflecting his “Anglo-African” heritage. Bartok’s Second Violin Concerto is infused with the spirit of his native Hungarian folk music. Elgar wrote odes to the people in his life by inscribing movements in his compositions with initials that hint of their identities.

Everyone loves percussion — especially kids! Take a whirlwind tour of the percussion family with the Symphony Tacoma Percussion Quartet. Musical selections include favorites from the Pink Panther, the story of “Mr. Brown Can Moo” and more!

El Amor Brujo is De Falla’s homage to the folksongs and dances of Andalusian Gypsies. Strauss demonstrates his understanding of the potential of the horn’s role as a solo and instrument. Gina Gillie’s Reverie portrays the divergent scenes of dreams. Kodály drew inspiration for the Dances of Galánta from Hungarian folk music he discovered in Vienna. Arturo Marquez’ Danzon No. 2 captures the movement and rhythms of Latin ballroom dancing.
