Westmoreland Symphony Orchestra

Greensburg, PA, United States

The Westmoreland Symphony Orchestra (WSO) is a distinguished cultural institution located in Greensburg, Pennsylvania, with a rich history dating back to its founding in 1969. Initiated by a group of local musicians and community leaders, the WSO was established with the vision of providing high-quality orchestral performances under the leadership of an exceptional conductor. Dr. Karp, a renowned conductor who later became the General and Music Director of the Pittsburgh Opera, was chosen to fulfill this role. The orchestra began with amateur musicians performing a four-concert season at Greensburg Salem High School, and under Dr. Karp's guidance, it experienced growth in both size and the quality of its sound. In 1974, the WSO introduced its first annual outdoor summer concert and launched the Visiting Artists Program, designed to bring ensemble performances to schools. After Dr. Karp fell ill in 1975, Michalak, then Assistant Conductor of the Pittsburgh Symphony, took over the leadership and remained through the 1977-78 season. The following season saw a conductor search that resulted in the appointment of Markou, then Associate Conductor of the Canton Ohio Symphony. Markou's first season in 1979-80 was significant for the orchestra as it moved to the newly renovated Palace Theatre and expanded its subscription concerts to five. Markou's 31-year tenure was marked by a steady improvement in the performance quality of the orchestra, garnering critical acclaim in later years. During the 2011-2012 season, the WSO underwent a national search for a new conductor, which led to the appointment of Maestro Meyer as the Artistic Advisor, a role that was later redefined as Artistic Director upon his contract signing. A tradition that has been maintained for several decades is the WSO's December presentation of Tchaikovsky's Nutcracker at the Palace Theatre. Since 1975, the orchestra has also offered Young People’s Concerts, which are two one-hour daytime concerts aimed at elementary school students and held at Greensburg Salem High School. In 1981, Maestro Markou founded the Westmoreland Youth Symphony Orchestra (WYSO), and he conducted the orchestra during its initial years. Furthering its commitment to music education, the WSO Academy of Music was established by Morrie Brand in 2005, creating over a dozen additional music education programs for both youth and adults. The WSO celebrated its 53rd anniversary season in 2021-2022, continuing its legacy of providing classical performances and music education to the region, supported by the loyal patronage of its community. With a bright future envisioned, the WSO remains committed to presenting incredible music and fostering the growth of its educational programs. The Westmoreland Symphony Orchestra is based at 951 Old Salem Road, Greensburg, PA 15601, and can be reached at 724.837.1850. The organization continues to enrich the cultural landscape of its community through a diverse range of concerts and performances, including works such as Verdi’s Requiem, the music of Billy Joel, Mahler’s Titan, Beethoven’s Fifth, and holiday favorites. It also offers various support and educational opportunities, including donations, special events, concert sponsorships, advertising, and a comprehensive youth orchestra program.
