Great artists from Great Britain make for a dynamic evening of chamber music when the brilliant pianist and composer Sir Stephen Hough joins the Castalian Quartet!

Named by The Economist as one of Twenty Living Polymaths, Sir Stephen Hough combines a distinguished career and a longstanding international following as a pianist with those of composer and writer. He is the first classical performer to be awarded a MacArthur Fellowship and only classical pianist to be knighted this century. One of the most distinctive artists of his generation, Hough’s awe-inspiring range and command is even more astonishing live, worthy of every superlative that he’s been given.

In an ingenious chain of inspirations spanning 220 years, the Castalian String Quartet’s program—and the Turnage commission featured on it—mark the 100th anniversary of Janáček’s Kreutzer Sonata quartet. For his new quartet, Turnage returned to words by the Beethoven sonata’s original dedicatee for inspiration. The Castalian Quartet are “a feisty group, with a real personality and strong interpretative ideas”.

Formed in 2011, the Castalian String Quartet has distinguished itself as one of today’s most dynamic young quartets. Appointed the inaugural Hans Keller String Quartet in Residence at the Oxford University Faculty of Music in 2021, it also received the Royal Philharmonic Society’s 2019 Young Artists Award.

Friday afternoon, November 10, from 3:30-4:30 pm, the Castalian Quartet will conduct a masterclass featuring string students from Boise State, followed by a short preview performance of their evening program on the Boise Chamber Music Series. The classes will begin in the Recital Hall, C200, and room B213 on the second floor.

They are Artist in Residence at the Wigmore Hall in London and the inaugural Hans Keller String Quartet in Residence at the Oxford University Faculty of Music. They also received the Royal Philharmonic Society’s 2019 Young Artists Award.

The Boise Chamber Music Series presents Castalian String Quartet

The London-based Castalian Quartet, “a feisty group, with a real personality and strong interpretative ideas” (The Guardian), has distinguished itself as one of the most energetic and sophisticated young string quartets performing today. Recently named quartet-in-residence at the Oxford University Faculty of Music, the ensemble is also a 2019 recipient of the Royal Philharmonic Society’s Young Artists Award. The Castalian makes its Cal Performances debut with a wide-ranging program spanning 200 years, from Haydn’s bold D major quartet from his Op. 20 set to Schubert’s restless and luminous final quartet, to contemporary Finnish composer Kaija Saariaho’s haunting Terra Memoria.

Every year, the Chamber Arts Society of Durham reserves one concert for a young and highly promising ensemble. This year that slot is filled by the London-based Castalian String Quartet. Hailed by The Guardian as “a feisty group, with a real personality and strong interpretative ideas,” this effervescent quartet is making its debut performances throughout the USA this season.
They begin their program with Haydn, whose six Opus 20 quartets are often considered the earliest truly mature pieces in the string quartet literature. Opus 20 #4 presents us with a group of warm friends in congenial conversation. The same kind of intimacy envelops Benjamin Britten’s third and final quartet (1976). Britten concentrates on two voices at a time, roaming through all six combinations possible in a group of four. Schubert’s majestic G-Major quartet, his 15th and final one, is marked by massive expansiveness and tortured inquisitiveness.  The strife between modes, voices, melodies, and rhythms is relentless throughout.
