The 2024 concert season at Tippet Rise kicks off with a debut recital by esteemed pianist Jean-Efflam Bavouzet. Of his playing, the Financial Times, wrote “He makes you listen to music as if you are discovering it Eureka!-style: yes, that’s what the composer must have meant.” Bavouzet will perform an all-Ravel program including two sets of waltzes – one intimate and the other virtuosic and brilliant, and Miroirs – a work of five movements, each dedicated to members of the group of innovative young French artists, poets, critics, and musicians to which Ravel belonged at the turn of the 20th century.

Hailed by The Telegraph as “potentially one of the greatest pianists of the 21st century,” Yevgeny Sudbin has performed several extraordinary concerts at Tippet Rise over the years and we are delighted to welcome him back for the fourth time. Sudbin will present a program of masterpieces from the mid-19th and early 20th centuries by composers and piano virtuosos Liszt, Chopin, Debussy, Scriabin, and Saint-Saëns.

Tippet Rise is delighted to welcome back Grammy-winning cellist Arlen Hlusko for the inaugural performance at the Geode, a new open-air performance space set in a panorama of seven surrounding mountain ranges.

Tippet Rise is delighted to welcome Canadian-Macedonian mezzo-soprano Ema Nikolovska and Indian-American pianist Kunal Lahiry to the art center for their debut. Both BBC New Generation Artists, they will perform a program titled Devotions, inspired by love and nature, with songs by Priaulx Rainier, Aaron Copland, Schubert, Prokofiev, Emily Doolittle, Oliver Messian, and George Crumb, in addition to the US premiere of Korean-American composer, pianist, and YouTuber Nahre Sol’s Apperceptive Algorithms.

Pianist and virtuoso Marc-André Hamelin returns for his second performance at Tippet Rise. The recipient of seven Juno Awards and 11 Grammy nominations, Hamelin is one of the most respected and sought-after performers of the world’s concert stages. He will present a wide-ranging program across time, including works by Frank Zappa, Stefan Wolpe, and John Oswald, bookended by sonatas by Haydn and Rachmaninoff.

We are delighted to welcome the quartet collective Owls for their Tippet Rise debut. Each an artistic force in their own right, violinist Alexi Kenney, violist Ayane Kozasa, cellist Gabriel Cabezas, and cellist-composer Paul Wiancko share an uncommonly fierce creative spirit which drives the quartet to challenge the way meaningful concert experiences are conceived. Their performance begins with Wiancko’s Vox Petra, followed by the Baroque-period work – Les Barricades Mystérieuses (The Mysterious Barricades – by François Couperin, and a contemporary string quartet, Good Medicine, by Terry Riley. Tippet Rise’s artistic advisor and pianist Pedja Mužijević will join members of the quartet for Schumann’s Piano Quartet in E-flat Major.

We are honored to welcome flutist Claire Chase for her debut performance at Tippet Rise. Described by The New York Times as “the most important flutist of our time,” Claire Chase is a musician, interdisciplinary artist, and educator. She is a MacArthur Fellow, a Professor of the Practice at Harvard University, and was the Debs Creative Chair at Carnegie Hall in the 2022-23 season. Claire will be performing outdoors at the Geode, Tippet Rise’s new open-air performance space set in a panorama of seven surrounding mountain ranges.

Leading an all-Beethoven program with three different instrumentations, we are delighted to welcome back pianist and longtime friend of Tippet Rise Anne-Marie McDermott for her fourth concert appearance. McDermott, artistic director of Bravo! Vail Music Festival and a member of Lincoln Center’s Chamber Music Society, will perform Beethoven’s 32 Piano Variations in C Minor on an Original Theme. Returning artist and cellist Christopher Costanza, a longtime member of the St. Lawrence String Quartet, will join for Beethoven’s Seven Variations on a Theme from Mozart's Magic Flute for Cello and Piano. Making his Tippet Rise debut, violinist Chad Hoopes, winner of First Prize at the Young Artists Division of the Yehudi Menuhin International Violin Competition and a 2017 recipient the Avery Fischer Career Grant, will perform Sonata for Violin and Piano No. 7 in C Minor, Op. 30 No. 2 alongside McDermott.

This concert marks the Tippet debut of two multi-faceted artists – Grammy-nominated violinist Tessa Lark and classical and jazz harpist Charles Overton. Tessa Lark, consistently praised by critics and audiences for her astounding range of sounds, technical agility, and musical elegance, is also a highly acclaimed fiddler in the tradition of her native Kentucky. Charles Overton is a frequent performer with the Boston Symphony Orchestra and Boston Pops, as well as jazz clubs throughout the northeast. He aims to create a musical environment that is accessible, exciting, and resonates deeply with audiences. Lark and Overton are performers, arrangers, and composers of a program including early romantic virtuoso music by Camille Saint-Saëns, Eugène Ysaÿe, and Jean Cras; a traditional fiddle work “Boy in the Gap”; and the Morgan Lewis jazz standard "How High the Moon". Their performance will conclude with a trip to Argentina for Astor Piazzolla’s Histoire du Tango.

Founded in 2015 in Bozeman, Baroque Music Montana is well-known throughout the region for their engaging presentations of chamber music inspired by history. We are thrilled to welcome several members of the chamber group to Tippet Rise for their concert debut, including founder and baroque violinist Carrie Krause; Nate Helgeson, performing on the dulcien, a guitar-like instrument; and John Lenti, playing the theorbo, a predecessor to the modern-day bassoon. Their performance will feature 17th century music by Italian, German, and Spanish composers intermingled with informative and lively explanations and unique insights into the oldest music of the 2024 season.

Baroque Music Montana

Pianist and composer Julien Brocal returns to Tippet Rise in a special program which alternates between his own compositions and works by John Luther Adams. Julien Brocal is a longtime friend of the art center, having spent several weeks in residency to record his 2018 album Reflections. We are delighted to welcome him back for his third concert season appearance, and excited for a new project he will record with cellist Camille Thomas at Tippet Rise this year.

As part of Tippet Rise’s Wander series, this concert will take place among works of art located on the art center’s Cottonwood Campus, including Iron Tree by Ai Weiwei and Daydreams and Cursive Takes a Holiday by Patrick Dougherty. Performing together as a group, returning flutist Jessica Sindell will be joined by debuting artists including oboist Tamer Edlebi, clarinetist Afendi Yusuf, bassoonist Jake Thonis, and horn player Nathaniel Silberschlag, offering a unique opportunity to hear these talented musicians outside their orchestral settings. The group will take the audience on a trip to Hungary, Argentina, and back to the United States with music by György Ligeti, Endre Szervánszky, Astor Piazzolla, and Samuel Barber.

The concert season at Tippet Rise concludes with a debut performance by cellist Camille Thomas alongside returning pianist Julien Brocal. Frequent collaborators, the two will play a mixed program of works by Chopin and August Franchomme, composers who were not only contemporaries during the early 19th century, but also close friends. Julien Brocal is also a longtime friend of Tippet Rise, having spent several weeks in residency here to record his 2018 album Reflections. We are delighted to welcome him back, and excited for new project that he and Camille Thomas will record at Tippet Rise this year.
