Kansas City Medical Arts Symphony

Kansas City, KS, United States

The Kansas City Medical Arts Symphony is an esteemed ensemble with a rich history dating back to its inception in 1959. The symphony was established by Eleanor Sharp and her colleagues at the University of Kansas Medical Center, who sought to combine their passion for symphonic music with their professional lives in the healthcare sector. The symphony has steadfastly adhered to its dual mission since its founding: to provide a platform for amateur musicians to perform significant works of Western music and to enhance the cultural landscape of Kansas City through the presentation of free concerts. These concerts often include premiere performances of compositions by local artists. For three decades, the orchestra flourished under the baton of Leopold Shopmaker. In 1989, Dr. Merton Shatzkin took over the leadership role, continuing the tradition of excellence. John Bell succeeded Shatzkin in 2013, and the current Music Director is Steve Lewis. The Kansas City Medical Arts Symphony is composed of a diverse group of individuals, including physicians, nurses, pharmacists, dentists, healthcare students, and other community musicians from the Kansas City area, all united by their shared love for music. Throughout its history, the Kansas City Medical Arts Symphony has not only provided an artistic outlet for healthcare professionals and students but also contributed significantly to the cultural offerings available to the residents of Kansas City. Through its dedication to music and community service, the symphony has established itself as a unique and valuable institution within the region's artistic and healthcare communities.
