Experiments in Opera

Brooklyn, NY, United States

Experiments in Opera (EiO) is a Brooklyn-based, artist-led non-profit opera company founded in 2010 by composers Aaron Siegel, Matthew Welch, and Jason Cady. EiO is dedicated to expanding the boundaries of opera by supporting a diverse group of artists, musicians, composers, and librettists in their efforts to explore new narratives and innovative musical expressions. The company emphasizes the creation of adventurous, intimate, and experimental new operas that challenge traditional notions of the genre. With a mission to redefine opera for the 21st century, EiO has commissioned 93 new works from 62 composers, collaborating with over five hundred performers, designers, and directors from the New York City arts community. The organization has presented events at notable venues across Brooklyn and Manhattan, including Roulette, National Sawdust, The Flea Theater, and Symphony Space. In 2018, Kamala Sankaram joined as co-artistic director, further enriching the company's vision. EiO fosters a vibrant community through development workshops, performance opportunities, partnerships, and advocacy efforts, including a comprehensive online media library that showcases in-depth artist interviews and video documentation of their operatic works.
