The Brick Church, officially known as The Brick Presbyterian Church, has been a cornerstone of faith in New York City since its inception in 1767, with a brief hiatus during the Revolutionary War when its building was used by British forces. Originally an expansion of the crowded Wall Street Church, it became a separate entity in 1809. The church has occupied three locations throughout its history, moving in response to the shifting congregations within the city. Its current location since 1940 is at Park Avenue and 91st Street. The church's mission, reaffirmed in a 2003 Session and further detailed in a 2019 Mission Review, focuses on worship, service, learning, and connection, aiming to respond to God's word as found in the Old and New Testaments within the Presbyterian tradition. This mission is carried out through various pillars of community engagement including spiritual vitality, stewardship, outreach, nurture, and education. Over the years, The Brick Church has been led by a series of distinguished senior ministers, starting with John Rodgers in 1767 and, as of 2020, Thomas E. Evans. The church has been a significant presence in New York City, adapting to changes over centuries while maintaining its commitment to worship, education, and community service.
