Discover selections from Prokofiev’s Romeo and Juliet, alternating between the original orchestral version performed by the Chicago Symphony Orchestra and imaginative new jazz arrangements presented by the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra. The legendary Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra consists of 15 of the world’s finest ensemble players, arrangers and soloists. Led by artistic director and NEA Jazz Master Wynton Marsalis, this renowned orchestra returns to its self-proclaimed second home at Symphony Center.

Led by trumpeter and composer Wynton Marsalis, the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra is made up of 15 top soloists, ensemble players, and arrangers. The first half of the evening explores three essential architects of jazz: Duke Ellington, Jelly Roll Morton, and Charles Mingus, with musical direction by trombonist Vincent Gardner. The second half features Usonian Structures, a new suite by saxophonist Andy Farber, one of the finest big band composers and arrangers on today’s stage, with each movement inspired by the iconic designs of American architect Frank Lloyd Wright.

Revered as one of the greatest jazz drummers of all time, Max Roach was among the first to use music to address social, political, and racial issues of his time. The Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra, led by Music Director Wynton Marsalis, celebrates the centennial of this trailblazing musician and bandleader, whose innovative style influenced generations to come. He was an influential member of the Charlie Parker-Dizzy Gillespie Quintet, performed alongside Miles Davis on his seminal Birth of the Cool album, and formed the Clifford Brown-Max Roach Quintet. In 1961, Roach collaborated with his wife, the pioneering singer-songwriter Abbey Lincoln, and said in an interview with Downbeat Magazine that he would only play music that had social significance.

Composer, trumpeter, and standard-bearer for the art form, jazz legend Wynton Marsalis has earned scores of awards including the Pulitzer Prize for Music. In 1983, he became the first and only artist ever to win both a Classical and Jazz Grammy in the same year; in 1984 he did it again. Joined by the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra, The Philadelphia Orchestra performs Marsalis’s newest work on a program with Beethoven’s lively, melodic Seventh Symphony.
