The School of Music and Dance at San Diego State University, established through the merger of the music and dance departments in 1993, has a rich history dating back to the university's charter in 1898, when music was among the first areas of study. By the 1930s, a distinct major in music was approved, and the 1960s saw the introduction of graduate degrees in music. The 1980s marked the approval of the BA in Dance, distinguishing it from physical education, culminating in the addition of the BFA in Dance by 2003. Today, the School offers a comprehensive range of undergraduate and graduate degrees in music (BM, BA, MA, MM) and dance (BA, BFA), emphasizing high-quality performance, professional engagement, and practical training. It is committed to excellence, tradition, innovation, diversity, internationalism, interdisciplinary collaboration, advocacy, and engagement, aiming to nurture new generations of artists, choreographers, teachers, scholars, and other professionals. The School fosters a dynamic artistic environment, leveraging emergent technologies and international experiences to prepare students for rewarding careers in the arts.
