Harlem Stage

New York City, NY, United States

Harlem Stage, initially named Aaron Davis Hall, Inc., was established in 1983 as a beacon for artists of color, particularly Black artists, who historically faced censorship and inequitable treatment in the arts. Rooted in Harlem’s rich cultural legacy, the organization has dedicated nearly four decades to supporting visionary artists of color by providing them access, resources, and platforms to showcase their work. Harlem Stage emphasizes the intersection of art and social justice, amplifying voices through a variety of programs including the WaterWorks initiative for commissioning and producing new works, and the Frances Davis/Harlem Stage Arts Education Program, which enriches over 2,300 New York City public schoolchildren annually. The organization's programming spans music, dance, film, theater, and educational initiatives, celebrating both legendary and contemporary artists such as Harry Belafonte, Max Roach, Maya Angelou, and Meshell Ndegeocello, among others. Harlem Stage has been recognized for its commitment to artistic excellence and innovation, including receiving the Association of Performing Arts Presenters William Dawson Award for Programming Excellence. With a history of presenting groundbreaking works that respond to societal conditions, Harlem Stage continues to serve as an invaluable incubator for artistic talent and a champion of cultural diversity and social justice in the performing arts.
