The Newfangled Four won the International Collegiate Barbershop Quartet Contest in 2013, and most recently finished 6th place in the world in 2023, and are acclaimed for their fine singing and showmanship.

Originating from the Netherlands, this quartet consists of four exceptional musicians who specialise in historically informed performance practice as well as chamber music. The name ‘Narratio’ refers to the art of Rhetoric and illustrates the quartets focus on storytelling and interaction both between the musicians and between the quartet and the audience. The quartet continue their exploration of Beethoven's string quartets in this lunchtime concert with op. 132 in A minor.

From ancient times to the present day, music and dance have captured the spirit of humanity. Today's concert showcases three contrasting composers: Malcolm Arnold, Hans Werner Henze, and Edward Gregson. Arnold's Four Scottish Dances, composed in 1957, draws its inspiration from traditional Scottish folk dances. Henze's Ragtimes and Habaneras, written in 1976, was famously performed by the Grimethorpe Colliery Band at the BBC Proms that same year. Finally, Gregson's Dances and Arias merges lively, energetic dances with soulful, contemplative melodies, bringing the concert to a rousing conclusion.

Following their hugely successful Orchestral Qawwali Project, composer Rushil Ranjan and vocalist Abi Sampa now join forces with Manchester Camerata for a new collaboration which brings together the sounds of Western classical music with Carnatic song from South India. With its roots in deeply spiritual and Vedic traditions, Carnatic music's soaring melodies and rhythmic complexity combine to beautifully illustrate tales from Hindu mythology. Twenty years ago, Tim Garland, launched his Lighthouse Trio - a formidable band featuring the prodigiously talented pianist Gwilym Simcock and percussionist Asaf Sirkis. Together with Simcock and Sirkis, the Grammy winning saxophonist has an approach to music making that’s informed by a blend of fusion, folk and classical forms. Interplay is paramount between these much praised musicians and this gig, which features visuals from ’Moment Of Departure’ a project created by Turkish painter and printmaker Esra Kizir Gokcen, will capture their stunning agility and lyrical sensibility.

These extra special concerts are a musical representation of the 8 regions that make up the autonomous community of Andalucia in the South of Spain, the birthplace of flamenco; Cordoba, Sevilla, Cadiz, Malaga, Jaen, Granada, Huelva and Almeria. Part mini-opera, part ravishing sonic fantasy, Pierrot Lunaire is a modern masterpiece that simply has to be experienced live. Tonight it’s performed by Ensemble 360 – the remarkable, Sheffield-based collective whose whole mission is to make music speak. This will be magical.

Violinist and RWCMD graduate David Grubb (Novo Amor, Lowswimmer) invites you to step into the sonic world of Circadia, a dream fuelled journey through the human subconscious charting a typical sleep cycle. Moving through the sleep phases, we encounter strange phenomena such as exploding head syndrome, somnambulism, and lucid dreaming, all via a genre-hopping six piece ensemble of violin, clarinet, keys, guitar, bass and drums.

Rachel Podger has been called “the queen of the baroque violin”. And Heinrich Biber was the ultimate maverick of 17th century music – a composer who took a new-fangled instrument called the violin and made it sing, dance, pray and turn somersaults. We finish the year as we always do with a glittering night at the musicals, celebrating the best of festive musical theatre from stage and screen.

A combined recital highlighting the shared traditions of the guitar and harp. This event will feature solos, duos and ensembles exploring works reflecting upon nature and landscapes. A New Year’s Celebration: WNO Orchestra

Peter Donohoe is a legend among British pianists: an artist with fingers of steel and a heart of gold. “He's a lion of the keyboard but he's also a poet” writes The Herald, and today Donohoe explores the legacy of Frederic Chopin – with music by the great pianist-composers he inspired, as well as the tenderness, fantasy and romance of his own ever-popular Préludes.

Schubert’s huge, haunting late sonatas begin and end a recital that embraces the melancholy of William Byrd and the exquisite, untamed imagination of Janacek’s On an Overgrown Path.

Llŷr Williams – virtuoso pianist and RWCMD artist-in-association – reaches the end of a musical odyssey, and brings his journey full circle with sonatas by Haydn and Mozart and miniatures by Schumann that are simply more beautiful than they can ever be played. Tonight he lavishes all his “consummate skill and awe-inspiring musicianship” on music that’s as fresh now as when it was first created.
