Student Chamber Music Recital

The Ohio State Percussion Ensemble presents a concert featuring one of the most pivotal works of the late 20th century, Steve Reich’s iconic Drumming.

The Ohio State Percussion Ensemble had the honor and privilege of being taught the piece by rote (without sheet music) by Russell Hartenberger, one of the founding members of Steve Reich and Musicians and the percussion group Nexus. Hartenberger notes, “Through learning Drumming via imitation and repetition and foregoing notation, the players bypass the step of memory transference from the printed page thus giving them a heightened awareness of the process of the piece.”

Campus Orchestra presents its spring concert, performing works by Tchaikovsky, Holst and Mendelssohn. This ensemble is that of non-majors throughout the university and offers an opportunity to perform within an orchestral setting without committing to a formal musical degree. This semester, the students were challenged with difficult standard repertoire like Tchaikovsky’s beloved Romeo and Juliet, which they have tackled with grace.

Chamber winds perform Dances of the French Renaissance, Gervaise and Attaingnant/arr. Peter Reeve; Serenade in D minor, Op. 44, Antonin Dvořák; and will give the première performance of Justin Monroe's Blueprints for a City in the Sky. Monroe is pursuing the Master of Music in composition.

The Central Ohio Flute Association (COFA) welcomes guest artist Jennifer Gunn. The festival features a recital and master class by Gunn, a flute choir showcase, exhibitors, competition finals, lectures, clinics and more, all in the new Ohio State Timashev Family Music Building. The exhibit hall will feature national flute vendors and is the perfect place to try new flutes, browse large selections of flute music, and shop for flute accessories.

Charles Ives (1874–1954) was an American original. Leonard Bernstein called him “our Lincoln, our Edison,” and Ives was indeed both emancipator and inventor freeing American music from European bonds.

In his songs he demonstrated striking innovation and creativity, he experimented with rhythm and harmony, and he also found expression for some of his most personal and confidential musical thoughts.

Juliet White-Smith, professor of viola, and guest pianist Rick Ferguson present "Mid-Century Modern" — works for viola and piano from 1939–1975 by Ulysses Kay, Florence Price and Dmitri Shostakovich.

This program features early works for viola and piano by Ulysses Kay: his Sonatine (1939) and Sonata (1942), the former a romantic work written while at student at the Berkshire Music Festival (now Tanglewood) and the latter while a student of Paul Hindemith. The three works by Florence Price are a collection of two of her vivid and luxurious art songs (including "Songs to the Dark Virgin" with poetry by Langston Hughes; and "Night," setting of a poem by Louise C. Wallace) offered here as purely instrumental works alongside a transcription of her Elfentanz, originally for violin and piano. And finally, the program closes with Dmitri Shostakovich's swan song, his Sonata for Viola and Piano (1975), which traverses his musical influences in reverse chronological order beginning with a 12-tone row around which the first movement is organized to a middle movement transcription of a scene from his unfinished opera The Gamblers, and ending with an ethereal movement quoting the opening of Beethoven's Moonlight Sonata, Op. 27 No. 2, which served as a competition piece for Shostakovich as a young pianist.

Chorale's program includes selections by Homilius, Runestad, Guillaume, Pfautsch, and two settings from the Russian orthodox liturgy, Blagoslovi dushe moya gospoda by Rachmaninoff and Arvo Pärt. Men's Glee Club presents Cobb's "The Dawn's Awake;" Rotz's "Invictus," Ginsberg's "O Mistress Mine," Carnahan's "Hark, I hear the harps eternal" and Sperry's Ramkali.

University Chorus sings of the celestial — night, stars and sky — featuring a première of Narverud's extended edition of Ad astra; Brahms' O schöne nacht, Barber's "Sure on this Shining Night" and more. Women's Glee program, "Fire, Women and the Sea: the Mighty Three" — Aesop, emphasizes the strength of Womxn in the face of formidable forces. The elemental influences of fire and water are highlighted as agents of adaptation, endurance and creation in the songs of Hildegard von Bingen, Clara Schumann, Andrea Ramsey and Sara Bareilles, among others.

The Wind Symphony concludes the semester with an exciting and varied program, opening with Norman Dello Joio’s classic work Variants on a Medieval Tune, conducted by third-year DMA student Dustin Ferguson. Ukrainian composer Catherine Likhuta’s virtuosic Let the Darkness Out features alto saxophone soloist and assistant professor of teaching, Michael Rene Torres. David Maslanka’s Traveler has become one of his most popular works, written for a retiring conductor.  Maslanka writes: “The music begins with energy and movement, depicting an engaged life in full stride. At the halfway point, a meditative quiet settles in. Life's battles are largely done; the soul is preparing for its next big step.”

The Center for Medieval and Renaissance Studies and the School of Music co-host this year's annual symposium, which will explore issues in the contemporary scholarship on, and performance of, historical choral music. Participants will present their current thinking on pre-baroque 16th-century polyphony, Latin American and indigenous polyphonic traditions of the early colonial era, the roots of African American choral style, and cutting-edge issues in the study and performance of early choral music today.

We delight in welcoming Craig J. Kirchhoff back to campus for this performance. Kirchhoff is professor emeritus of conducting and director emeritus of University Bands at the University of Minnesota. Prior to leading the Minnesota band program, Kirchhoff was director of Bands at Ohio State for fourteen years (1979–1993). The program celebrates the impact of significant people in our lives — those friends who help us feel at ease, at peace, and at home.

The Ohio State University Jazz Ensemble, under the direction of Mike Smith, will present Where or Wayne – Celebrating The Life and Music of Wayne Shorter. This concert will give just a small overview of the 60-year musical odyssey of arguably the most unique and important composer in the history of jazz. From his time as a sideman with Art Blakey’s Jazz Messengers and Miles Davis' celebrated '60s quintet, to his groundbreaking electric innovations with Weather Report (the band he founded with Joe Zawinul), as well as his solo career that lasted from the late '50s to 2019, Wayne Shorter pushed and redefined the boundaries. His music explored as many different harmonic, melodic and rhythmic challenges as his unique imagination could bring forth. When asked what jazz meant to him, Wayne Shorter famously replied “Jazz means 'I dare you'!” The Jazz Ensemble gratefully accepts that challenge!

The Ohio State University Percussion Ensemble presents an exciting evening of percussive sights and sounds, showcasing music that ranges from the earliest days of the genre to works composed over the past several years. Featured on the program will be the seminal work Ionization, considered to be one of the first compositions written for percussion ensemble; Ennead by Joseph Krygier for a deconstructed set of chimes; Ching by William Cahn for five sets of "ching" cymbals; and Mark Duggan’s beautiful piece, Evocation — Gentle Rain Falling, featuring Ohio State flute alumna, Erin Helgeson Torres.

Enjoy an exciting new show when The Ohio State University Marching Band Hometown Concert performs at Mershon Auditorium on Sunday, Nov. 5 at 3 p.m. The Best Damn Band in the Land will entertain fans with selections from its popular halftime shows, fan favorites and traditional Ohio State tunes.

Ohio State University Opera Theatre presents a madcap hour of soap operas — literally! Thomas Pasatieri’s Signor Deluso and Douglas Moore’s Gallantry will be performed November 3–5, 2023 in the Recital Hall of the Timashev Family Music Building.

Signor Deluso tells the story of Deluso — a sincere, lovely gentleman who gets wrapped up in a misunderstanding that causes a near-divorce with his wife, mistaken identities nearly breaking up lovers, and the political overthrow of Paris!

Opera Theatre presents Madcap Soap Operas

The Ohio State University Marching Band is one of the few all-brass and percussion college bands in the country — a 228-piece block band patterned after the traditional British brass band.

The Jazz Studies area showcases student combos performing standards through contemporary tunes. Featuring the Bebop Combo (Chris Anderson), Video Game Soundtrack Combo (Robert Brooks), Latin Jazz Combo (Kris Keith), Organ Jazz Combo (Kevin Turner), Fusion Combo (Mike Smith), Art Blakey Combo (Kevin Turner).

However, seating is general admission and ticket holders must be seated by 7:15 p.m.; remaining seats will be released to the standby line at that time. We do expect some tickets to be available.

A special event honoring the life and legacy of Professor Emeritus James Pyne (1936–2020). Celebrating the clarinet and its repertoire with Professor Caroline Hartig and special guests, as well as Ohio State students and alumni, vendors, master classes, and performances including the Ohio State ClariNetwork Ensemble and the Pyne Celebration Clarinet Choir. Open to clarinetists of all ages and abilities, with activities for middle and high school students, college students, professionals and clarinet enthusiasts.

Join us for our 29th annual Halloween concert featuring student groups performing a variety of musical styles — from movie and TV themes to contemporary pop, folk, classical music spoofs and more.

Participants include the Horn Ensemble, Jazz Club Big Band, Oboe Studio, Scarlet Trombone Choir, Buckeye Bassoon Band, Flute Troupe, Percussion Studio Ensemble; vocal soloists Dana Carlson-Kottke, soprano and Geoffrey Gear, tenor.

Join us for an evening of music with pianist Orlay Alonso. Spanning the works of Liszt, Beethoven, Bach, Rachmaninoff, Ravel, deFalla, Lecuona and Albéniz, Alonso's program promises a rewarding audience experience, with guest artist Griset Damas-Roche, Flamenco dancer.

This three-day celebration is presented by the Franz Liszt International Piano Festival (2023) and Competition (2024) co-hosted by The Ohio State University and the Ohio Chapter of the American Liszt Society in commemoration of Liszt's 212th birthday (1811–1886).

Join us for a delightful faculty chamber recital featuring songs of Schubert and his contemporaries, presented by Caroline Hartig, clarinet; Laura Portune, soprano; C. Andrew Blosser, tenor and Ed Bak, collaborative pianist.

Rush Hour Series: Faculty chamber recital

This performance by the Ohio State Symphonic Band is a partnership with the exhibition “Facing Feelings: The Art of Raina Telgemeier” currently hosted at the Billy Ireland Cartoon Library and Museum. This concert explores the strong connection between listening and feeling as well as the influence of visual elements on emotional engagement. Audience will hear an “improvisational duet” between artwork of Raina Telgemeier and individual musicians from the Symphonic Band.

Symphonic Band presents "Feeling Heard"

A lecture-performance by Benjamin Bagby, founder of the medieval music ensemble Sequentia. Bagby will discuss the process of storytelling with voice and harp. As a performer, Bagby is interested in the intersection between the human voice and the harp, an instrument that played an essential role in performance a thousand years ago and still resonates today. He will consider the ways in which six strings, five fingers and one voice can achieve a unique personal synergy to tell a story.

"Beowulf" : Musical Performance of a Medieval Epic Saga

Our long-time favorite extravaganza returns! A fast-paced, collage-style performance that showcases a variety of student ensembles and musical styles. This concert is a traditional sell-out. Obtaining tickets in advance is recommended. Watch for information.
