Violinist Siwoo Kim is a captivating young artist on the musical scene, known for his stylistic sensitivity and incisive playing. He has received critical international acclaim for his performances, including the world premiere of Samuel Adler's violin concerto, recorded on Linn Records. Siwoo's recent credits include Carnegie Hall and concerts with renowned artists worldwide. The New York Times Kim’s playing “incisive” and “compelling” while Chicago Tribune’s John von Rhein said Kim plays with “stylistic sensitivity and generous tonal nuance.”

Passions run high in our third Masterworks. Music from, and about, Spain frame a virtuoso tango-inflected violin concerto from Argentina. We open with excerpts from Bizet’s Carmen— including the indelible Seguedille and Toréadors. Though French, Bizet brilliantly captures the swagger and ardor of the Iberian spirit. Spaniard Manuel de Falla’s energized, colorful ballet score, written for Diaghilev’s Ballet Russes (of Rite of Spring fame), overflowing with drama, high spirits, and, of course, castanets, occupies the second half. In between Astor Piazzolla’s homage to Vivaldi fuses classical forms with the passions of tango.

The Skaneateles Festival welcomes back the “exciting conductor-less band of strings” ECCO (New Yorker). Joined by founder-violinist Nick Kendall of Time for Three and recent 2023 Grammy-winner, the orchestra performs beloved music by Mozart as well as American composer William Grant Still’s joyous Dances from Panama. Eminent American pianist Shai Wosner joins ECCO to bask in the orchestra’s signature “warm glow” of sound (New York Times).

Pianist Shai Wosner, known for his “remarkable blend of the intellectual, physical and even devilish sides of performance” (Chicago Sun Times), joins members of ECCO for a program of music from the spiritual to the spooky: J. S. Bach’s heavenly chorale preludes; Hungarian composer György Kurtág’s alternately serene and demonic miniatures; and Beethoven’s hair-raising “Ghost” Trio. The program ends back on earth with Max Bruch’s lush, romantic Octet for Strings.

ECCO (East Coast Chamber Orchestra) fills the stage to share music of remembrance, nostalgia, and the will to live life to its fullest. The program features Edvard Grieg’s heartrending Holberg Suite “in the olden style”; Jamaican composer Eleanor Alberga’s tender elegy for her mother; and Franz Schubert’s searing, intense “Death and the Maiden” Quartet, heard here in Gustav Mahler’s unforgettable arrangement for string orchestra.

Guest artist Siwoo Kim performs the Bruch Scottish Fantasy as part of the Symphony Orchestra concert, which includes Coleridge-Taylor's "Dance" from Othello Suite and two Ravel works: Ma mère L'Oye ("Mother Goose Suite") and Daphnis and Chloé Suite No. 2.
