With its enormous popularity matched by the huge numbers of musicians required to perform it, a Carmina Burana concert is always a major event and season highlight. Featuring some of the most recognizable music ever written in its opening and closing minutes, Carmina Burana is a thoroughly propulsive and sometimes explosive work that remains surprisingly approachable throughout. It returns to Carnegie Hall, courtesy of the Orchestra of St. Luke’s, Westminster Symphonic Choir, Young People’s Chorus of New York City, and several exceptional soloists.

Gordon Getty's celebrated opera reimagined for film, Goodbye, Mr. Chips, receives a special screening at the historic Cameo Cinema in St. Helena. Getty’s fourth opera is based on the popular 1934 book Goodbye, Mr. Chips and other stories by James Hilton. Directed by Brian Staufenbiel, the film features tenor Nathan Granner, soprano Marnie Breckenridge, baritone Lester Lynch, and bass-baritone Kevin Short. The orchestra of stellar Bay Area players is conducted by Nicole Paiement. Members of the Young People’s Chorus of New York City, conducted by Francisco J. Núñez, also perform.

The World Premiere of unEarth, a multimedia event by Julia Wolfe that, in the composer’s words, “digs deep into the stories and science of our planet — looking at forced migrations, adaptations, species land loss, and changing seas … singing our fears and hoping for a way forward.” Opening the program is Sibelius’s Violin Concerto, with NY Phil Concertmaster Frank Huang as soloist.

In honor of Holocaust Remembrance Day, The Young People’s Chorus of New York City (YPC) will perform the historic and poignant operetta Brundibár. The performance will feature a cast of 40 choristers and a 13-piece orchestra, conducted by YPC Associate Conductor Sophia Papoulis, with direction by Eric Einhorn of On-Site Opera and costumes by Beth Goldenberg.

The Young People’s Chorus of New York City, an award-winning ensemble led by Francisco J. Núñez, returns to Festival Napa Valley for a celebratory and uniquely American concert. The evening includes the world premiere of Polaris by Nia Imani Franklin, an anthem that pays tribute to the making of Juneteenth a national holiday, and an arrangement of Gordon Getty’s celebrated choral work, Young America. Renowned baritone Lester Lynch reunites with the chorus for a selection of hymns and spirituals. Also performing are the winners of this year’s Manetti Shrem Opera Prize: soprano Mikayla Sager and tenor Mario Chang.
