The Playhouse

Weston-super-Mare, United Kingdom

The Playhouse Theatre, originally opened on 11 March 1882 with a revival of Offenbach’s "Madam Favart," underwent significant reconstruction in 1905. During this period, a part of the roof from the adjacent Charing Cross railway station collapsed, causing extensive damage. The theatre was repaired and reopened on 28 January 1907 with "The Drums of Oudh" and "Toddles" by Tristan Bernard and Andre Godfernaux. Over the years, it has hosted notable figures and organizations including W.S. Gilbert, actress-manager Gladys Cooper, the BBC, The Almeida Theatre Company, The Peter Hall Company, and Janet McTeer. In January 2003, Maidstone Productions acquired the theatre, with ATG Entertainment taking full ownership later. Recent productions include "Fiddler on the Roof," "Cyrano de Bergerac" with James McAvoy, and "The Seagull" with Emilia Clarke. The theatre is set to host "Cabaret" starring Eddie Redmayne and Jessie Buckley from 15 November 2021.
