Join us at the Rebecca Cohn Auditorium in Halifax for two exclusive performances on Friday, May 3, 2024, and Saturday, May 4, 2024, both starting at 7:30 pm.

This event will feature a stellar lineup of soloists, including soprano Miriam Khalil, mezzo-soprano Marion Newman, tenor Ernesto Ramirez, and baritone Jorell Williams. The Symphony Nova Scotia Chorus, alongside the Halifax Camerata Singers under the guidance of chorus master Joel Tranquilla, will also join to elevate the performance to new heights.

The program begins with T. Patrick Carrabré's "Just Society," setting the stage for the evening's highlight, Ludwig van Beethoven's Symphony No. 9. Known as Beethoven's last grand experiment and the pinnacle of western classical music, the Ninth Symphony is celebrated for its powerful message of hope, unity, and equality.

This performance is part of the Spotlight Series subscription and will proceed without an intermission, ensuring an immersive and uninterrupted musical journey. Join Opera Theater Oregon for a 35-minute scene from a new opera in development—reimagining the story of Sacajawea, the extraordinary Lemhi-Shoshone woman was a crucial member of the historic Lewis and Clark Expedition, from her Aqai-Dika, Indigenous perspective.

The presented scene is based on an incident of domestic violence recorded in the original expedition journals on August 14, 1805 and will be presented alongside excerpts of music, soundscapes, and presentations of traditional Agai-Dika/Lemhi-Shoshone music, language, and culture by Rose Ann Abrahamson.

The internationally renowned cast includes Kwagiulth and Stó:lō First Nations mezzo-soprano, Marion Newman premiering the role of Sacajawea, baritone Richard Zeller as Toussaint Charbonneau, and baritone Dan Gibbs as Captain William Clark. This scene also features Native American Flutist and composer Hovia Edwards with a chamber orchestra.

Sung in Aqai-Dika/Lemhi-Shoshone, Québécois French, English, and Plains Sign Language with English captions. Performances include a pre-show lecture by Rose Ann Abrahamson. Content warning: This production includes depictions of domestic violence.

When Ava, a young white woman, is thrown from her car in a crash and badly injured, she sees another body, a young native girl, lying on the ground. Their eyes meet…their worlds connect. This USA premiere production of Missing, by distinguished First Nations playwright Marie Clements & Juno-award winning composer Brian Current, gives voice, in English and the Native language, Gitxsan, to the stories of missing and murdered Indigenous women and girls. A poetic expression of loss, hope and the spirit finding home.
