Guess what? After all these years, Neeme Järvi is finally stepping up to the podium for our New Year’s concert! The colorful celebration looks back at the Maestro’s incredible 75-year journey as a conductor. From his very first performance at the Estonia Theatre back in 1950, all the way to most recent musical surprises.

Originally conceived for the formation of a cello quintet, the voicing is often spread wide over the ensemble, giving the music an expansive quality of sound. Within Strum I utilized texture motives, layers of rhythmic or harmonic ostinati that string together to form a bed of sound for melodies to weave in and out. The strumming pizzicato serves as a texture motive and the primary driving rhythmic underpinning of the piece. Drawing on American folk idioms and the spirit of dance and movement, the piece has a kind of narrative that begins with fleeting nostalgia and transforms into ecstatic celebration.— Jessie Montgomery

Beethoven’s most widely recognized piece, Symphony No. 5, was one of the earliest symphonies to call for trombones in the brass section, and the first to reintroduce a theme from one movement to a later one.

With its iconic four-note opening and themes of sorrow and delight threaded throughout, Beethoven’s Fifth Symphony is a cornerstone of our musical pantheon. The pioneering symphony kicks off the YSO’s year-long celebration of the German composer, Beethoven. Paired with this masterwork is Sergei Prokofiev’s First Symphony, which is infused with unexpected harmonies. The concert concludes with Christopher Theofanidis’ Bassoon Concerto that was written specifically for our esteemed guest soloist Martin Kuuskmann. Beethoven lives on!
