D’un Matin de printemps (“Of a Spring Morning”) was composed during the last months of the composer’s short life. Boulanger had already made a name for herself as the first woman ever to win the Prix de Rome. Stricken with a terminal illness at age 24, her final works convey the intimate and mature compositional voice that explore color and harmony. One of Poulenc’s friends said of him: “There is in him something of the monk and the street urchin.” The Gloria brilliantly expresses these characteristics, with its charismatic fusion of solemnity and mischievous exuberance. Poulenc described the process thus: “While writing it I had in mind those Crozzoli frescoes with angels sticking out their tongues, and also some solemn-looking Benedictine monks that I saw playing football one day.” César Franck Symphony in D minor is perhaps the greatest symphony written by a French person in the latter half of the 19th century. It is best known for its cyclical nature, bringing back melodies from previous movements throughout the piece. Of particular note is a stunning english horn solo buried within.

Daniela Bonfiglioli, a member of the Royal Stockholm Philharmonic Orchestra’s first violin section, often performs with pianist Terés Löf. At a previous soup concert, the duo played music by Beethoven and Rebecca Clarke. This time, we have the great pleasure of hearing them in César Franck’s Sonata for Violin and Piano – a much-loved work that many consider among the finest in the genre.

This colorful program highlighting a variety of music styles features the work of two influential French composers. César Franck’s expressive and fiery piano quintet will be performed alongside Claude Debussy’s only string quartet, an avant-garde tapestry of textures infused with the compositional stylings of Franck. Twenty years after his participation in the inauguration of the restored great organ of the Philharmonic Hall of Liège, Benoît Mernier, organ professor at the Royal Conservatory of Brussels, brings J.-S. Bach into dialogue with Romantic composers who were inspired by him: Mendelssohn, who was influenced by the rediscovery of the St. Matthew Passion , Brahms, who entrusted his musical testament to the organ in the form of chorales, Widor, who transcribed for organ the finale of this same Passion , and Franck, who wrote a Third Chorale in the form of a tribute to J.-S. Bach.

Violinist Jeremias Pestalozzi has long been one of these artists. Born in 2005, he began playing the violin at the age of five and was later accepted as a junior student at the Munich University of Music and Performing Arts. Sometimes you just have to meet the right people: In the case of pianist Roman Borisov, it was thanks to his kindergarten teacher that he was introduced to the legendary piano teacher Mary Lebenzon at the Novosibirsk Conservatory at the age of four, who accompanied him musically until 2020. The lessons paid off, as he won several important competitions and awards as a child. In 2022, Roman Borisov won first prize at the Kissinger KlavierOlymp as the youngest participant – causing a sensation in the piano world. With his natural stage presence and his intuitive yet highly focused interpretations, he is currently securing his place in the world of classical music. “This program delves into the legends and myths of violin lore via the three-sided conversation between violin, violinist, and composer. We kick off this journey with a solo violin sonata composed by the namesake of the violin I now play, the Belgian virtuoso Eugène Ysaÿe. The Devil’s Trill Sonata is the virtuosic consequence of a Faustian pact between Tartini and his violin teacher—the devil himself. Franz Schubert gushed “I have heard an angel sing” after attending a sold-out performance in Vienna by Niccolò Paganini on his famed “Cannone” Guarneri del Gesù. The second half of the concert features more earthly pursuits in the form of two wedding gifts. César Franck dedicated his famed sonata to his longtime collaborator and friend Eugène Ysaÿe on his wedding day (you can’t miss the church bells in the finale). For my own nuptials last summer, my groomsman and musical best friend, composer Chris Rogerson, presented me with this Arietta.”

On the occasion of the opening of the Royal Juillet Musical de Saint-Hubert, the OPRL brings with it César Franck's impious knight, a cursed hunter who is one of the darkest heroes of Romanticism. Under the direction of Pierre Bleuse, the Orchestra will also perform the famous "New World" Symphony , with its famous English horn solo, and Richard Strauss's Burlesque (for piano), joined by the faithful Florian Noack who will take on this diabolical concerto movement, marked by the influence of Liszt and Brahms.

Communicating with fiery passion Grieg’s Piano Concerto is imbued with a Nordic quality echoing traditional Norwegian dances and instruments. The striking, opening gesture (perhaps one of the most recognisable in all classical music based upon descending seconds and thirds) is but one sign of how Norwegian folk music was making its impact upon his emerging style. It continues with many attractive themes, a thrilling cadenza and much dazzling originality. The first great thunderbolt to issue from Tchaikovsky’s pen and the best early realisation of his incredible potential, this fantasy overture careens between the tension of the clashing Montague and Capulet houses and the heart-breaking beauty of the protagonists’ love.

Iveta Apkalna pursues milestones in organ music: Johann Sebastian Bach’s enormous Chaconne, César Franck’s ground-breaking »Prélude, fugue et variation« or Camille Saint-Saëns’ »Danse macabre« which exploits the symphonic sound possibilities of the organ. Two outstanding young musicians give an atmospheric duo recital in the idyllically located Palais im Großen Garten: only last season, the Finnish-Cuban pianist Anton Mejias, born in 2001, won over the festival audience with his piano recital in the same location. Now, he returns with a violin partner, one of the most high-profile violinists of his generation. The American violinist Chad Hoopes, born in 1994, has made a name for himself worldwide with his outstanding talent and brilliant tone. The two young virtuosi have put together a resounding program inspired by the theme of love, in keeping with the Festival’s motto. Fiery finger acrobatics and an enchanting sound blend to create a concert leaving nothing to be desired.

Cameron Carpenter is the world’s most visible organist, the first ever to be nominated for a GRAMMY Award for a solo album. He holds the 2012 Leonard Bernstein Award, and in 2014, launched his International Touring Organ (ITO)- a first-of-its kind digital organ built to his own design. He is a virtuoso composer/performer who is smashing the stereotypes of organ and classical music. Cameron’s latest album, recorded at the Berlin Konzerthaus includes his own rendition of Bach’s Goldberg Variations as well as Hanson’s Symphony #2, and was released by Universal / DECCA in the fall of 2021. One of his previous releases, ‘All You Need is Bach’ debuted at #1 on the traditional classical charts. Recent highlights include recitals with the Los Angeles Philharmonic, the Lucerne Festival, Philharmonie Cologne, Festspielhaus Baden-Baden, Philharmonie Luxembourg, his debut at the Cité de La Musique, Paris and a residency at Konzerthaus Berlin.

Pulsing, shifting rhythms characterize Adams’ First Quartet. A steady tick of time crackles with high energy. Then we hear Meditation on Providence by Seattle’s own Angelique Poteat and César Franck’s ethereal, passionate sonata — originally conceived for violin, here given by cello.

As a composer, Franz Liszt is one of the most innovative musicians of the 19th century and one of the creators of the genre of tone poems, the most famous of which - based on the poetry of Alphonse de Lamartine - can be heard in this symphony concert: "Les Préludes". As a piano virtuoso, Liszt caused astonishment everywhere and this is reflected not least in his particularly complex Piano Concerto No. 2, which takes on downright symphonic features. César Franck also left his audience baffled: his symphony, which was to remain a solitary work in his work, seemed far too idiosyncratic. "Au banan"! - a concert evening whose virtuosity is astonishing.

Join us for the Jackson Symphony Orchestra's 75th Diamond Celebration on April 26, 2025, at 7:30 PM, held at the prestigious Potter Center. This landmark event marks a significant milestone in the orchestra's history, celebrating 75 years of musical excellence and community engagement. The evening promises an unforgettable concert experience, featuring a unique collaboration with esteemed partners including the Jackson School of the Arts, Jackson Youth Symphony Orchestra, Ballet Chelsea, and Jackson Chorale.

The concert will showcase a collage of captivating music, nostalgic videos, and reflections on the orchestra's impactful history. Under the baton of special guests Stephen Osmond, Richard Sherman, Ralph Votapek, and Mitsuru Kubo, the program will span classics to contemporary pieces, highlighting the diversity and spirit of collaboration that defines the Jackson Symphony Orchestra.

The program schedule includes masterpieces such as Johann Strauss, Jr.'s "Fledermaus: Overture," César Franck's "Symphonic Variations," Edward Elgar's "Nimrod from Enigma Variations," and Piotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky's "Finale: Allegro con fuoco from Symphony No.4," among others. The concert will have a runtime of approximately 2 hours.

Before the concert, attendees are invited to a free, interactive lecture at 6:30 PM, offering insights into the evening's program and the opportunity to engage with the music on a deeper level.

Following the concert, the celebration continues with an afterparty sponsored by Rehmann. This event offers a great opportunity to mingle with musicians, guest artists, composers, and fellow symphony fans. The afterparty will feature entry, hors d’oeuvres, and drinks, all included in the $20 ticket price.

Inspired by a Company engagement at the Edinburgh Festival and set to an evocative Mendelssohn score, Balanchine’s Scotch Symphony, for a lead couple and a corps de ballet, is a nod to the romantic tradition of ballet. Jerome Robbins’ enthralling Glass Pieces, a perennial favorite in the repertory, moves through moods to rise to a galvanizingly energetic finale. And while Justin Peck is celebrated for his high-energy ensemble works, Belles-Lettres reveals another aspect of his voice, with its series of gently lyrical pas de deux and solos steeped in an air of reflective romanticism.
