Cameron Carpenter is both a pop star and a bird of paradise. For years, the dazzling organist has thrilled audiences around the world with the traveling organ he specially designed. But during the coronavirus pandemic, it was irreparably damaged. Over ten years ago, the keyboard virtuoso made his "Toccata" debut in Duisburg, and now, after a long absence, he returns to the magnificent Eule organ in the Philharmonie Mercatorhalle. Yet he remains true to his penchant for the unusual, playing the Goldberg Variations, a work written by Johann Sebastian Bach for a two-manual "clavicimbel"—or harpsichord for short. To this day, this enigmatic cycle remains one of the pinnacles of piano literature: 30 variations, some of which pose horrendous technical challenges and offer tremendous expressive depth, based on an "aria" of timeless beauty. Before Bach's masterpiece, as a kind of prelude, Cameron Carpenter plays one of the three chorales composed by César Franck shortly before his death in 1890, which are considered the pinnacle of his organ output. Originally written for the magnificent organ in the Parisian church of Sainte-Clotilde, where Franck served not only as Kapellmeister but also as organist.

It seems strange to suggest that Hana Chang is at the beginning of a great career. But a glance at her diary shows that this young artist is already at the centre of international concert life. She performs with orchestras such as the Stuttgart Philharmonic, the Prague Radio Symphony Orchestra and the Utah Symphony Orchestra. Recitals have taken her to America, Europe and Asia. Her chamber music partners include Janine Jansen, Daniel Müller-Schott and Francesco Piemontesi. Hana Chang's competition successes are equally impressive: she has won prizes at the Concert Artists Guild Competition, the International Louis Spohr Competition, the Yehudi Menuhin Violin Competition and many others. In the Debut Series, Hana Chang, who is currently receiving the finishing touches as an outstanding performer with Christian Tetzlaff at the Kronberg Academy, will also be making her debut at the Alte Oper.

Diana Tishchenko likely still has fond memories of her last performance with the Duisburg Philharmonic : In June 2024, the Ukrainian-born violinist, who was born in Crimea, played a violin concerto by the Ukrainian composer Yevhen Stankovych – and received enthusiastic applause from the audience for this politically powerful statement. Now she returns as a chamber musician and, together with her piano partner José Gallardo, who returns after his Duisburg debut in the 2024/2025 season, will present European composers who have played with the soundscape of America. The Frenchman Ravel incorporated elements of jazz, which was still new and exciting at the time, into his violin sonata. Jazz harmonies and sophisticated rhythms can also be heard in the concert fantasy that Igor Frolov compiled on themes from George Gershwin's opera "Porgy and Bess," including the catchy tune "Summertime." César Franck, for his part, composed his violin sonata—still a classic in the repertoire today—as a wedding gift for the Belgian violin virtuoso and fellow composer Eugène Ysaÿe. Ysaÿe, too, dedicated his sonata to a famous colleague: the Romanian composer George Enescu, with whom he once performed together.

D’un Matin de printemps (“Of a Spring Morning”) was composed during the last months of the composer’s short life. Boulanger had already made a name for herself as the first woman ever to win the Prix de Rome. Stricken with a terminal illness at age 24, her final works convey the intimate and mature compositional voice that explore color and harmony. One of Poulenc’s friends said of him: “There is in him something of the monk and the street urchin.” The Gloria brilliantly expresses these characteristics, with its charismatic fusion of solemnity and mischievous exuberance. Poulenc described the process thus: “While writing it I had in mind those Crozzoli frescoes with angels sticking out their tongues, and also some solemn-looking Benedictine monks that I saw playing football one day.” César Franck Symphony in D minor is perhaps the greatest symphony written by a French person in the latter half of the 19th century. It is best known for its cyclical nature, bringing back melodies from previous movements throughout the piece. Of particular note is a stunning english horn solo buried within.

Bach into dialogue with Romantic composers who were inspired by him: Mendelssohn, who was influenced by the rediscovery of the St. Matthew Passion , Brahms, who entrusted his musical testament to the organ in the form of chorales, Widor, who transcribed for organ the finale of this same Passion , and Franck, who wrote a Third Chorale in the form of a tribute to J.-S. For their return appearance, the Juilliard and Hamelin—an artist known the world over for his unrivaled blend of consummate musicianship and radiant technique—unite for César Franck’s mammoth Piano Quintet in F Minor, a work that roils with passion and searing emotional intensity.

Written over six years, it journeys from a somber funeral march to a luminous vision of resurrection and renewal. Mahler once described this symphony as “my whole life in one work.” Themes of struggle, hope, and transcendence will bring us to a glorious reassurance of light in our lives.

After her stunning San Francisco debut recital last season, the festival is honored to welcome back Asiya Korepanova who will once again share a spectacular solo recital with us. This program centers around Ravel's demonic masterpiece, Gaspard de la nuit while treating us to gorgeous music from his contemporaries, painting a musical picture of influence and evolution. Within the tradition of French music from this period, the multitude of diverse musical voices comes through each in their own way. From the charm and brilliance of Louise Farrenc and Cecile Chaminade to the imposing solemnity of César Franck's Prelude, Choral et Fugue, this evening offers a deeply satisfying journey through late 19th and early 20th century French piano music. The church in Rosenow, built in the mid-19th century in the neo-Gothic style, provides an idyllic setting for the "Young Elite" concert series and performances by promising young artists. Violinist Jeremias Pestalozzi has long been one of these artists. Born in 2005, he began playing the violin at the age of five and was later accepted as a junior student at the Munich University of Music and Performing Arts. Accompanied by Magdalene Ho, winner of the 2024 International German Pianist Award, the current student of violin virtuoso Julia Fischer presents a multifaceted program featuring classics of the violin repertoire.
