Twenty years after his participation in the inauguration of the restored great organ of the Philharmonic Hall of Liège, Benoît Mernier, organ professor at the Royal Conservatory of Brussels, brings J.-S. Bach into dialogue with Romantic composers who were inspired by him: Mendelssohn, who was influenced by the rediscovery of the St. Matthew Passion , Brahms, who entrusted his musical testament to the organ in the form of chorales, Widor, who transcribed for organ the finale of this same Passion , and Franck, who wrote a Third Chorale in the form of a tribute to J.-S. Bach.

Our master of ceremonies is genial conductor Stephen Bell, who’ll be taking us through a roll call of Christmas hits from Tchaikovsky and Rimsky-Korsakov and heartwarming movie music from Home Alone to Frozen. And as it’s Christmas you can enjoy some good old-fashioned audience participation singing along with White Christmas and trying to keep up with the reindeer in Leroy Anderson’s Sleigh Ride.

When PCMS last presented the renowned Juilliard Quartet with pianist Marc-André Hamelin, in 2019, a prolonged ovation followed a glorious interpretation of Dvořák’s Piano Quintet in A Major. “This was a performance, above all, of high polish and efficiency” (Philadelphia Inquirer). For their return appearance, the Juilliard and Hamelin—an artist known the world over for his unrivaled blend of consummate musicianship and radiant technique—unite for César Franck’s mammoth Piano Quintet in F Minor, a work that roils with passion and searing emotional intensity.

Local favorites Steve and Allison Martin join HSO for festive selections from The Nutcracker, Leroy Anderson’s classic Sleigh Ride, “Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas,” and some of the Martins’ favorite songs, including “The Prayer,” “O Holy Night,” and “Ave Maria.”  Rounding out the family-friendly concert will be the audience favorite “Christmas Singalong,” full of well-known holiday carols! Steve and Allison are well known in West Michigan, having sung on opera stages and musical productions locally and around the country.  Allison received her Masters of Music from Michigan State University.  Steve holds a doctorate and master’s in music from Michigan State University. This artist is simply incredible! In recent years, Jaeden Izik-Dzurko has collected first prizes at international piano competitions like other people collect stamps. He won three in 2022, and two more in 2024 – and those are just the most important competitions. To say that the Canadian is a magnificent pianist seems almost an understatement: Up and down the country, the press and audiences praise his outstanding technique, the depth of his interpretations, and his charisma. The church in Rosenow, built in the mid-19th century in the neo-Gothic style, provides an idyllic setting for the "Young Elite" concert series and performances by promising young artists. Violinist Jeremias Pestalozzi has long been one of these artists. Born in 2005, he began playing the violin at the age of five and was later accepted as a junior student at the Munich University of Music and Performing Arts. Sometimes you just have to meet the right people: In the case of pianist Roman Borisov, it was thanks to his kindergarten teacher that he was introduced to the legendary piano teacher Mary Lebenzon at the Novosibirsk Conservatory at the age of four, who accompanied him musically until 2020. The lessons paid off, as he won several important competitions and awards as a child. In 2022, Roman Borisov won first prize at the Kissinger KlavierOlymp as the youngest participant – causing a sensation in the piano world. With his natural stage presence and his intuitive yet highly focused interpretations, he is currently securing his place in the world of classical music. In our "Excellent!" series, he will make his debut at the Rheingau Music Festival this year with an impressive program.

“This program delves into the legends and myths of violin lore via the three-sided conversation between violin, violinist, and composer. We kick off this journey with a solo violin sonata composed by the namesake of the violin I now play, the Belgian virtuoso Eugène Ysaÿe. The Devil’s Trill Sonata is the virtuosic consequence of a Faustian pact between Tartini and his violin teacher—the devil himself. Franz Schubert gushed “I have heard an angel sing” after attending a sold-out performance in Vienna by Niccolò Paganini on his famed “Cannone” Guarneri del Gesù. The second half of the concert features more earthly pursuits in the form of two wedding gifts. César Franck dedicated his famed sonata to his longtime collaborator and friend Eugène Ysaÿe on his wedding day (you can’t miss the church bells in the finale). For my own nuptials last summer, my groomsman and musical best friend, composer Chris Rogerson, presented me with this Arietta.”

On the occasion of the opening of the Royal Juillet Musical de Saint-Hubert, the OPRL brings with it César Franck's impious knight, a cursed hunter who is one of the darkest heroes of Romanticism. Communicating with fiery passion Grieg’s Piano Concerto is imbued with a Nordic quality echoing traditional Norwegian dances and instruments. The striking, opening gesture (perhaps one of the most recognisable in all classical music based upon descending seconds and thirds) is but one sign of how Norwegian folk music was making its impact upon his emerging style. It continues with many attractive themes, a thrilling cadenza and much dazzling originality. The first great thunderbolt to issue from Tchaikovsky’s pen and the best early realisation of his incredible potential, this fantasy overture careens between the tension of the clashing Montague and Capulet houses and the heart-breaking beauty of the protagonists’ love.

Two outstanding young musicians give an atmospheric duo recital in the idyllically located Palais im Großen Garten: only last season, the Finnish-Cuban pianist Anton Mejias, born in 2001, won over the festival audience with his piano recital in the same location. Now, he returns with a violin partner, one of the most high-profile violinists of his generation. The American violinist Chad Hoopes, born in 1994, has made a name for himself worldwide with his outstanding talent and brilliant tone. The two young virtuosi have put together a resounding program inspired by the theme of love, in keeping with the Festival’s motto. Fiery finger acrobatics and an enchanting sound blend to create a concert leaving nothing to be desired.

Cameron Carpenter is the world’s most visible organist, the first ever to be nominated for a GRAMMY Award for a solo album. He holds the 2012 Leonard Bernstein Award, and in 2014, launched his International Touring Organ (ITO)- a first-of-its kind digital organ built to his own design. He is a virtuoso composer/performer who is smashing the stereotypes of organ and classical music. Cameron’s latest album, recorded at the Berlin Konzerthaus includes his own rendition of Bach’s Goldberg Variations as well as Hanson’s Symphony #2, and was released by Universal / DECCA in the fall of 2021. One of his previous releases, ‘All You Need is Bach’ debuted at #1 on the traditional classical charts. As a composer, Franz Liszt is one of the most innovative musicians of the 19th century and one of the creators of the genre of tone poems, the most famous of which - based on the poetry of Alphonse de Lamartine - can be heard in this symphony concert: "Les Préludes". As a piano virtuoso, Liszt caused astonishment everywhere and this is reflected not least in his particularly complex Piano Concerto No. 2, which takes on downright symphonic features. César Franck also left his audience baffled: his symphony, which was to remain a solitary work in his work, seemed far too idiosyncratic. "Au banan"! - a concert evening whose virtuosity is astonishing.

This landmark event marks a significant milestone in the orchestra's history, celebrating 75 years of musical excellence and community engagement. The concert will showcase a collage of captivating music, nostalgic videos, and reflections on the orchestra's impactful history. Under the baton of special guests Stephen Osmond, Richard Sherman, Ralph Votapek, and Mitsuru Kubo, the program will span classics to contemporary pieces, highlighting the diversity and spirit of collaboration that defines the Jackson Symphony Orchestra.

Jerome Robbins’ enthralling Glass Pieces, a perennial favorite in the repertory, moves through moods to rise to a galvanizingly energetic finale. And while Justin Peck is celebrated for his high-energy ensemble works, Belles-Lettres reveals another aspect of his voice, with its series of gently lyrical pas de deux and solos steeped in an air of reflective romanticism.

Yuanxin Chen, collaborative piano - First Year Master's Recital

Kerson Leong, described by the Toronto Star as “not just one of Canada’s greatest violinists but one of the greatest violinists, period,” performs a dynamic program of sonatas by Poulenc, Fauré, Boulanger, and Franck. 

This concert is made possible by the Olympia Philharmonic Society and the Hennings-Fischer Foundation. This evening is also generously supported by The Jackson Family, in honor of Seth Novatt, for the career development opportunities given by him to outstanding young music talents at the Colburn School.
