Far from home, Dvořák poured all his heartbreak and longing into a cello concerto like no other: a symphony in all but name, as sweet and as stormy as life itself. Meanwhile in France, the Belgian master César Franck created a symphony that’s practically a Gothic cathedral in sound – a world of swirling mists and monumental visions, crowned with a melody that you’ll never forget. Guest conductor Marie Jacquot scales its heights tonight, and joins the ‘sublime’ (Gramophone) Kian Soltani in Dvořák’s magnificent Concerto.

Johannes Moser, known for performances seasoned by his capacious imagination and poetic artistry, is joined by his regular duo partner Andrei Korobeinikov in a programme hallmarked by two fascinating pairings of works. Nadia Boulanger’s 3 pieces, composed in 1914, provide a playful introduction to the five contrasting movements of the Cello Sonata Britten wrote for Mstislav Rostropovich in 1961, while Rachaminov’s Vocalise makes a charming companion to the cello version of César Franck’s weighty Violin Sonata.

The Antwerp Symphony Orchestra celebrates local music in this poignant programme. It features music by Wim Henderickx, the late composer in residence and a cherished figure in contemporary classical music. His legacy continues to resonate deeply. Pianist-composer Arthur De Greef’s Cinq chants d’amour, on texts by Charles Fuster, transport us to the Romantic era, with hints of Flemish carillon delicately woven into the soprano’s accompaniment. A devoted disciple of Franz Liszt, De Greef also championed works by César Franck, the Liège-born composer who shaped a generation of French musicians.

Cameron Carpenter is both a pop star and a bird of paradise. For years, the dazzling organist has thrilled audiences around the world with the traveling organ he specially designed. But during the coronavirus pandemic, it was irreparably damaged. Over ten years ago, the keyboard virtuoso made his "Toccata" debut in Duisburg, and now, after a long absence, he returns to the magnificent Eule organ in the Philharmonie Mercatorhalle. Yet he remains true to his penchant for the unusual, playing the Goldberg Variations, a work written by Johann Sebastian Bach for a two-manual "clavicimbel"—or harpsichord for short. To this day, this enigmatic cycle remains one of the pinnacles of piano literature: 30 variations, some of which pose horrendous technical challenges and offer tremendous expressive depth, based on an "aria" of timeless beauty. Before Bach's masterpiece, as a kind of prelude, Cameron Carpenter plays one of the three chorales composed by César Franck shortly before his death in 1890, which are considered the pinnacle of his organ output. Originally written for the magnificent organ in the Parisian church of Sainte-Clotilde, where Franck served not only as Kapellmeister but also as organist.

It seems strange to suggest that Hana Chang is at the beginning of a great career. But a glance at her diary shows that this young artist is already at the centre of international concert life. She performs with orchestras such as the Stuttgart Philharmonic, the Prague Radio Symphony Orchestra and the Utah Symphony Orchestra. Recitals have taken her to America, Europe and Asia. Her chamber music partners include Janine Jansen, Daniel Müller-Schott and Francesco Piemontesi. Hana Chang's competition successes are equally impressive: she has won prizes at the Concert Artists Guild Competition, the International Louis Spohr Competition, the Yehudi Menuhin Violin Competition and many others. In the Debut Series, Hana Chang, who is currently receiving the finishing touches as an outstanding performer with Christian Tetzlaff at the Kronberg Academy, will also be making her debut at the Alte Oper.

The gifted Lili Boulanger died at the age of just 24. Despite her fragile health, she managed to create a small yet exquisite oeuvre, primarily chamber and vocal music of incomparable spirituality and impressionistically delicate color. The sparkling Scherzo "D'un matin de printemps," lasting only a few minutes, is in no way inferior to the best works of Debussy or Ravel.

Lisa Batiashvili doesn’t just play the violin—she conjures worlds with it. Hailed as “the complete musician” (The Times, London), she has mesmerized audiences in the world’s most revered halls — including a spellbinding 2015 appearance in Richardson Auditorium. Now, in this rare and intimate duo recital, she joins forces with Giorgi Gigashvili, the young Georgian pianist protégé of Martha Argerich, whose volcanic energy and poetic touch are making waves across the globe. Their program is a journey through raw emotion and staggering virtuosity—Beethoven’s Violin Sonata No. 3 brims with charm and fire, setting the stage for Prokofiev’s haunting Violin Sonata No. 1—a masterpiece of shadow and intensity, where ghostly whispers, icy lyricism, and explosive power push both musicians to the edge. A new work by Josef Bardanashvili, a fellow Georgian whose music pulses with mystery and soul, makes its Princeton debut before the night closes in the rapture of Franck’s Violin Sonata—a piece so intoxicatingly beautiful it’s been called “a love letter in music.” This concert is a high-voltage meeting of artistic minds, generations, and traditions—a program of music that grabs you and doesn’t let go, performed by two of the most magnetic artists of our time.

Diana Tishchenko likely still has fond memories of her last performance with the Duisburg Philharmonic : In June 2024, the Ukrainian-born violinist, who was born in Crimea, played a violin concerto by the Ukrainian composer Yevhen Stankovych – and received enthusiastic applause from the audience for this politically powerful statement. Now she returns as a chamber musician and, together with her piano partner José Gallardo, who returns after his Duisburg debut in the 2024/2025 season, will present European composers who have played with the soundscape of America. The Frenchman Ravel incorporated elements of jazz, which was still new and exciting at the time, into his violin sonata. Jazz harmonies and sophisticated rhythms can also be heard in the concert fantasy that Igor Frolov compiled on themes from George Gershwin's opera "Porgy and Bess," including the catchy tune "Summertime." César Franck, for his part, composed his violin sonata—still a classic in the repertoire today—as a wedding gift for the Belgian violin virtuoso and fellow composer Eugène Ysaÿe. Ysaÿe, too, dedicated his sonata to a famous colleague: the Romanian composer George Enescu, with whom he once performed together.

Join Music Director Xian Zhang and superstar pianist Daniil Trifonov for an evening of French elegance. Saint-Saëns’ Second Piano Concerto is full of wit and quick humor that turns on a dime. From a stern Bach-like fantasia to a dancing frenzy, it’s the perfect vehicle for one of the world’s greatest pianists. Fauré’s Pavane serves as an even-tempered prelude, serene and as courtly as the dance that inspired it. On a different scale, Franck’s Symphony — the only one he wrote — dates from the height of his powers and reveals a composer questing for new sounds and sonority to deliver music to feed the soul.

D’un Matin de printemps (“Of a Spring Morning”) was composed during the last months of the composer’s short life. Boulanger had already made a name for herself as the first woman ever to win the Prix de Rome. Stricken with a terminal illness at age 24, her final works convey the intimate and mature compositional voice that explore color and harmony. One of Poulenc’s friends said of him: “There is in him something of the monk and the street urchin.” The Gloria brilliantly expresses these characteristics, with its charismatic fusion of solemnity and mischievous exuberance. Poulenc described the process thus: “While writing it I had in mind those Crozzoli frescoes with angels sticking out their tongues, and also some solemn-looking Benedictine monks that I saw playing football one day.” César Franck Symphony in D minor is perhaps the greatest symphony written by a French person in the latter half of the 19th century. It is best known for its cyclical nature, bringing back melodies from previous movements throughout the piece. Of particular note is a stunning english horn solo buried within.

French music is a matter close to Simon Gaudenz's heart – and at the same time, it forms a repertoire that is still too rarely the focus of attention in Germany. Its magic lies in its subtle distance: sounds like fleeting scents, shimmering plays of color, transparency, and rhythmic precision create soundscapes of enchanting beauty. In this spirit, André Caplet's delicate cantata "Tout est lumière" resonates, as does Ernest Chausson's heartfelt "Poème" and Maurice Ravel's concert rhapsody "Tzigane" – masterfully interpreted by Tianwa Yang.
