Embark on a musical journey with the Orchestre Philharmonique Royal de Liège (OPRL) as they tour Hungary, from the vibrant city of Budapest to the historic Pécs. Under the baton of Gergely Madaras, this tour promises to be a celebration of Hungary's rich musical tradition, featuring performances in three major venues across the country. The highlight of the tour is the performance on Friday, November 22, 2024, at 7:30 PM at the prestigious Budapest Liszt Academy.

The OPRL, with its distinguished history as the sole professional symphonic ensemble in Francophone Belgium since 1960, will present a program that showcases the orchestra's versatility and rich sound. The repertoire includes the somber "Lugubre Gondole" by Liszt in an orchestration by John Adams, Elgar's deeply emotional Cello Concerto, and Franck's Symphony, a piece that serves as a calling card for the OPRL, highlighting their role as cultural ambassadors.

The surging passions of César Franck’s repurposed sonata perfectly complement the lyricism, humour, and prescient unrest that infiltrate the Shostakovich that precedes it. Together with Arvo Pärt’s mesmerising distillation of stillness, the Fauré centenary is affectionately acknowledged twice-over; Dvořák dips into nostalgic reverie; and remembering childhood, too, is Sérgio Assad, whose evocative Menino was originally composed for Yo-Yo Ma and guitar duo.

Featuring two of today’s brightest rising stars, this duo concert in our most intimate venue thrills on every level. It’s the recital debut of violinist María Dueñas, who gave a “stupendous” performance here in 2022 with the Los Angeles Philharmonic and Gustavo Dudamel. “Dueñas was wholly captivating ... she could have drawn blood from [the violin’s] strings,” wrote The New York Times. The piece she performed to such acclaim was a new work by Carnegie Hall’s 2024–2025 Debs Composer’s Chair Gabriela Ortiz, who contributes another new work for this special occasion. On piano is Alexander Malofeev, an extraordinary artist of rapidly increasing international renown, who makes his own recital debut in March 2024.

Together with l'Orchestre Philharmonique de Radio France, she will perform Lalo's moving Cello Concerto. Two major figures from Polish music – the virtuoso violinist Henryk Wieniawski (1835-80) and the wide-ranging, folk-influenced Szymanowski – are drawn on by the duo; the violinist aptly won Second Prize at the International Henryk Wieniawski Competition in Poznań in 2016.

First Prize Winner of the 2022 YCA Susan Wadsworth International Auditions and Finalist in the 2023 Rubinstein Piano Competition, Chaeyoung Park has been praised as a passionate pianist who “does not play a single note without thought or feeling” (New York Concert Review). Embracing a broad range of the classical music literature, her programs feature works ranging from the early French Baroque by Rameau, to Beethoven sonatas, to new music by living composers including South Korean classical composer Unsuk Chin. Through Park’s various roles as a recitalist, chamber musician, and concerto soloist, she has performed at Carnegie’s Weill Recital Hall, Bravo! Vail Music Festival, Tongyeong International Music Festival, Ravinia’s Bennett Gordon Hall and Symphony Center’s Orchestra Hall.

Daniel Hope has toured the world as a virtuoso soloist for 25 years and is celebrated for his musical versatility as well as his dedication to humanitarian causes. Winner of the 2015 European Cultural Prize for Music (whose previous recipients include Daniel Barenboim, Plácido Domingo and the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra), Hope appears as soloist with the world’s major orchestras and conductors, also directing many ensembles from the violin. Since the start of the 2016/17 season, Daniel Hope is Music Director of the Zurich Chamber Orchestra – an orchestra with whom he is closely associated since his early childhood.

Flutist Joanna Lau is currently pursuing her Masters in Music at Carnegie Mellon, studying with Lorna McGhee. Joanna actively subs with the New World Symphony, Canton Symphony, and is on trial as a finalist for the Piccolo/Flute 3 position in the Johnstown Symphony. She will be a Flute Fellow at Music Academy of the West this summer, and has previously attended National Orchestra Institute and Round Top Festival Institute. Joanna is passionate about sharing music with the community through teaching and performing. She has a small studio of private flute students and regularly performs at Aspinwall Presbyterian Church services. Joanna also holds a degree in Neuroscience with a minor in English from Harvard College. Her former teachers include Cynthia Meyers, Elizabeth Rowe, and Linda Chesis. When Joanna is not playing the flute, she enjoys writing, drinking coffee, and taking lots of naps.

(Third Coast Review), the American-Canadian Callisto Quartet brings together four musicians who share a deep passion for bringing chamber music to audiences around the world. Since their inception at the Cleveland Institute of Music in 2016, Callisto has garnered top prizes in nearly every major international chamber music competition and has been hailed by audiences across the globe. Grand Prize winners of the 2018 Fischoff National Chamber Music Competition and Second Prize Winners of the 2019 Banff International String Quartet Competition, the Callisto Quartet has also taken home prizes from the Bordeaux, Melbourne, and Wigmore Hall competitions. Currently the Fellowship Quartet in Residence at Yale University, Callisto has previously held residencies at Rice University’s Shepherd School of Music and the Escuela Superior de Música Reina Sofía in Madrid, Spain. From 2020-2022 Callisto was the Ernst Stiefel Quartet in Residence at Caramoor Center for Music and Arts, where they were the first quartet to perform all six string quartets of Bartòk.

French composer César Franck’s Le Chasseur maudit — “The Cursed Hunter” — is based on a ballad about a man commits the grave sin of hunting on the Sabbath and is doomed to be eternally chased by demons. BSO Assistant Conductor Earl Lee leads the sultry, atmospheric 1949 Saxophone Concerto by French composer Henri Tomasi; making his BSO debut, American Steven Banks is one of today’s leading classical saxophone performers. The program closes with the emotional turmoil of Pyotr Tchaikovsky’s Symphony No. 4, which opens with the famous “fate” motif, and sweetened by the composer’s great gift for beautiful melody.
