In a program celebrating the 100th anniversary of George Gershwin’s Rhapsody in Blue, Windscape will commission eight of MSM’s composition students to riff on the Rhapsody in a series of two-minute pieces for wind quintet.

American classical music has long been indebted to the European tradition. This concert features European composers that had major influence on the American music scene.

Antonín Dvorák lived was the head of the first music conservatory in the United States, encouraging American composers to use folk music to create a national style. Ernst Bloch was the president of Cleveland Institute of Music and San Francisco Conservatory, while composing his distinctive music. Amy Beach, the lone American composer on the program, was educated in the European tradition while studying at the New England Conservatory

Aaron Copland’s heartfelt portrayal of a day in the life of a newly married pioneer couple lies at the heart of a program bursting with lush lyricism. The Pulitzer Prize-winning score to Martha Graham’s ballet Appalachian Spring will be heard in its original 13-instrument version. New SMF faculty oboist Marion Kuszyk, Associate Principal Oboe of the Los Angeles Philharmonic, joins faculty hornist Michelle Reed Baker and six fellows in Mozart’s delightfully contrasting serenade for wind octet. The program concludes with one of the crown jewels of the chamber music repertoire—Brahms’ Piano Quintet in F Minor. The Attacca Quartet and SMF Music Director Jeffrey Kahane collaborate on this passionate work.

MSM Artists in Residence: Windscape presents Dreams from Sephardia

The LSU School of Music is pleased to present the 10th annual Double Reed Day, an event for double reed enthusiasts of all ages and abilities. Professionals, students, teachers, and music directors are all welcome. Students will have the opportunity to learn from LSU faculty members and guest artists such as Nancy Ambrose King and Frank Morelli, refining their skillsets and learning new techniques to excel as individuals and ensemble performers.

This fundraising event features the opportunity to mingle with the Festival musicians in a relaxed and festive atmosphere. Masks are strongly recommended in the lobby and theater.
