The Ring Cycle, Wagner’s magnum opus, continues with Die Walküre, the second epic installment in the series. The daughters of Wotan, ruler of the gods, serve as Valkyries tasked with guiding the souls of fallen warriors to Valhalla. But as scandal erupts, Wotan finds himself at odds with whom he most trusts.

Die Walküre is the second of Wagner’s four-opera Ring cycle. The first act narrates the tale of a forbidden romance with Wagnerian grandeur and themes that call the cycle’s other operas and characters to mind. FWSO Music Director Robert Spano leads the orchestra and star vocalists in a special concert version of this act, preceded by Sibelius’ Symphony No. 6, which the composer poetically described as “cold spring water” and the “scent of first snow.”

Not seen here since 1977, Debussy’s symbolist masterpiece will be directed and designed by Netia Jones, who recently directed A Midsummer Night’s Dream. She presents us with a dreamlike and meditative world, which seems of no time and of all time. Four thrilling singers will have their SFO debuts this summer including baritone Huw Montague Rendall and mezzo-soprano Samantha Hankey.
