Music Of The Baroque: The St. John Passion

In a performance the Guardian called “an astonishing tour de force,” Swedish soprano Miah Persson enthralls at the center of Blank Out, Michel van der Aa’s chamber opera about tragedy, memory, and loss. Persson is the sole performer onstage, but throughout the work, she interacts with a video of her character’s grown son (baritone Roderick Williams), sings with a recording of the Netherlands Chamber Choir and with layered recordings of her own voice, and films herself as she navigates a miniature set of a country house, the imagery projected in real time to create the 3D backdrop that she inhabits onstage. In van der Aa’s singular creation, what is real and now melds with what is remembered and what is felt as Persson and Williams reveal a shared trauma, inspired by the life and work of South African poet Ingrid Jonker.

A magnificent song of celebration (sung in English!), Solomon celebrates the famously wise king in action: as a devoted husband to his beloved queen (never mind the 699 other wives or the 300 concubines), as a sage dispenser of justice (remember the two mothers laying claiming to the same baby?) and as a lavishly welcoming host to the visiting Queen of Sheba.

Beginning with an intense scene of a hero’s funeral, Mahler’s huge Second Symphony transports us on a remarkable journey, delving deep into life and death from every possible perspective, from terrifying to transcendent. As Beethoven did in his Ninth, Mahler adds voices near the end, barely audible at first, but then ringing out along with massive orchestral forces in a towering climax, as the soul is raised into immortality.
