Rhapsody in Blue, Lang Lang and the Sächsische Staatskapelle Dresden conducted by Christian Thielemann

Join us for a series of special concerts under the baton of the renowned conductor Christian Thielemann, featuring the Symphonieorchester des Bayerischen Rundfunks. These performances are set to illuminate the grandeur of Anton Bruckner's Symphony No. 5 in B flat major, a masterpiece that showcases the composer's struggle and triumph in its creation. Thielemann, an internationally recognized specialist in the German Romantic repertoire, promises to bring out the monumental character of this work.

The concert series kicks off with two special concerts at the Munich Residence, Herkulessaal. The first takes place on Friday, 30th June 2023, at 8:00 pm, followed by another performance on Saturday, 1st July 2023, at 7:00 pm. The series then moves to Bamberg for a guest concert at the Joseph-Keilberth-Hall, Joseph-Keilberth-Saal, on Sunday, 2nd July 2023, at 5:00 pm. The final performance will be held at the Regentenbau in Bad Kissingen on Sunday, 9th July 2023, at 7:30 pm.

This concert series not only offers a rare opportunity to experience Bruckner's Fifth Symphony in the hands of Thielemann but also provides a glimpse into the meticulous preparation that goes into such a performance. A not-to-be-missed season highlight! The legendary Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra returns to Zellerbach Hall with longtime collaborator Christian Thielemann at the podium. Over the course of three thrilling programs, the orchestra traverses a century of canonic repertoire—from the heroic music of Viennese classicism, through several generations of opulent Austro-German Romanticism, to the expanded sonorities of the Second Viennese School near the turn of the 20th century. These works showcase the mighty Vienna musicians at their finest, artists renowned for playing both “rich in detail and fearsome in its intensity” (The Guardian).

The first program features two evocative orchestral tone poems, matching the chromaticism of Schoenberg’s emotionally saturated Transfigured Night with Strauss’ massive and exhilarating An Alpine Symphony, a symphonic masterwork depicting a day-long trek through the mountains. The second program features Brahms’ serene and supremely lyrical Second Symphony, introduced by two effusive works inspired by the sea: Debussy’s technicolor triptych La mer and Mendelssohn’s overture The Hebrides, which was inspired by Scotland’s rugged coastal landscapes. The orchestra unleashes its full power in its final Berkeley concert, when it tackles Bruckner’s massive and magisterial Eighth Symphony, a work both orchestra and conductor recently recorded as part of an ongoing cycle of the composer’s music. “Provenance matters here. It helps if the orchestra has the music in its DNA. [Bruckner]…draws from Thielemann and the Vienna Philharmonic music-making of the rarest pedigree” (Gramophone).
