This unique concert experience will illuminate the profound narratives behind some of the most celebrated compositions in classical music, featuring a lineup of pieces that bridge personal stories with the rich histories of the instruments used to perform them.

The evening will spotlight Brahms’ "String Sextet No. 1," a masterpiece that will be brought to life through the personal stories of the musicians and the venerable histories of their instruments. Adding to the musical tapestry, we will present Bartók’s "Contrasts," a vibrant fusion of classical music and jazz elements, originally commissioned by the legendary Benny Goodman. This piece will showcase the talents of Yura Lee on violin, Anthony McGill on clarinet, and Gilles Vonsattel on piano, creating an unforgettable auditory experience.

Further enriching the program, Michi Wiancko’s "Lullaby for the Transient" will offer a meditative reflection on themes of immigration, performed by an ensemble including Simone Porter and TBA on violins, Jonathan Vinocour on viola, Paul Wiancko on cello, and Anthony McGill returning on clarinet.

Midweek Masterworks: Instrumental Stories

We are delighted to welcome the quartet collective Owls for their Tippet Rise debut. Each an artistic force in their own right, violinist Alexi Kenney, violist Ayane Kozasa, cellist Gabriel Cabezas, and cellist-composer Paul Wiancko share an uncommonly fierce creative spirit which drives the quartet to challenge the way meaningful concert experiences are conceived. Their performance begins with Wiancko’s Vox Petra, followed by the Baroque-period work – Les Barricades Mystérieuses (The Mysterious Barricades – by François Couperin, and a contemporary string quartet, Good Medicine, by Terry Riley. Tippet Rise’s artistic advisor and pianist Pedja Mužijević will join members of the quartet for Schumann’s Piano Quartet in E-flat Major.

Taking place outdoors beneath the Domo, the quartet collective Owls will be joined by flutist Claire Chase for a performance like no other. Each an artistic force in their own right, Owls is comprised of violinist Alexi Kenney, violist Ayane Kozasa, cellist Gabriel Cabezas, and cellist-composer Paul Wiancko. All share an uncommonly fierce creative spirit which drives the quartet to challenge the way meaningful concert experiences are conceived. Claire Chase, described by The New York Times as “the most important flutist of our time,” is a musician, interdisciplinary artist, and educator. She is a MacArthur Fellow, a Professor of the Practice at Harvard University, and was the Debs Creative Chair at Carnegie Hall in the 2022-23 season.

“No string quartet has ever been so popular or has had so wide an audience, globally, and culturally” (Los Angeles Times). The trailblazing Kronos Quartet continues to rewrite the rules of the string quartet, proving time and again the urgent relevance of the beloved art form. Experience the ensemble members’ virtuosity and adventuresome spirit when they return to Carnegie Hall with a program that features two premieres co-commissioned by Carnegie Hall: music by Sun Ra, reimagined by Terry Riley and Sara Miyamoto in collaboration with Kronos, and a new piece by Norwegian artists Benedicte Maurseth and Kristine Tjøgersen—with Maurseth and Kronos joining forces on Hardanger fiddles. Also on the program is Aleksandra Vrebalov’s lyrical Gold Came From Space, a New York premiere written for Kronos.

The Grammy Award–winning Attacca Quartet performs an extraordinary program that features music by 2024–2025 Debs Composer’s Chair Gabriela Ortiz, one of the world’s leading composers today. It includes the world premiere of a string quartet composed for the Attacca (co-commissioned by Carnegie Hall), as well as Ortiz’s acclaimed, four-movement celebration of Mexico’s Day of the Dead festivities: Altar de muertos, originally commissioned by Kronos Quartet—whose cellist, Paul Wiancko, composed the final piece of the program. “If Haydn were alive to write a string quartet today, it may sound something like Paul Wiancko’s LIFT” (NPR).
