Midori is a visionary artist, activist and educator who explores and builds connections between music and the human experience and breaks with traditional boundaries, which makes her one of the most outstanding violinists of our time. She will mark the 40th anniversary of her professional debut this season. In concert around the world, Midori transfixes audiences, bringing together graceful precision and intimate expression. This anniversary season is marked by a new recording of the complete Beethoven sonatas for piano and violin performed by Midori and the celebrated pianist Jean-Yves Thibaudet – a landmark recording of two artists at the height of their careers (Warner Classics). Coinciding with the new release, Midori and Thibaudet perform all ten sonatas over three concerts at Dartmouth College and a single concert of three of the sonatas in Chicago.

We open our season with bold statements—from the first notes of Robert Schumann’s achingly romantic Fourth Symphony, the seeds of burgeoning passion and inexpressible joy are planted. Writing this work to his new young bride—whom he had finally married after an agonizing year-long struggle to get her father’s permission to let the wedding go forward—he poured his whole self into this glorious music, running the field from tempestuous struggle to the explosion of joy at the end, in one of music’s great creations.

Exploring and building connections between music and the human experience, Midori consistently breaks with traditional boundaries, making her one of the most outstanding violinists of our time. To mark the 40th anniversary of her debut, she offers two different and exciting programs in which contemporary works dialogue with Bach compositions. Neither is to be missed.

Her style combines a deeply curious mind, generosity of spirit, and brilliant command of the violin. This season we celebrate the 40th anniversary of her legendary New York Philharmonic debut with two different programs.

Performing with the BSO at Symphony Hall for the first time since 2003, renowned violinist Midori joins Israeli conductor Omer Meir Wellber in his BSO debut for Pyotr Tchaikovsky’s beloved Violin Concerto. Israeli composer Ella Milch-Sheriff’s The Eternal Stranger for narrator and orchestra relates Ludwig van Beethoven’s difficulty in society due to his personality and deafness to the hostility and rejection experienced by refugees and other “strangers.” The funeral march from the Eroica Symphony and the overture from Beethoven’s opera about a political imprisonment remind us of the composer’s abiding universal humanity.

Boston Symphony Hall

JoAnn Falletta conducts superstar violinist Midori in her return engagement with the BPO performing the lush and lyrical Korngold Violin Concerto. Fandangos is a colorful showpiece for orchestra that provides the perfect season opener, and the epic Scheherazade tells the story of the Arabian Nights and the 1,001 Tales, featuring concertmaster Nikki Chooi.

In her universally respected career of more than 35 years, Midori’s has been recognized with numerous awards, from the Kennedy Center Honors and Brahms Society prize in 2020 to her designation as a United Nations Messenger of Peace for her devotion to community engagement and music education. The Los Angeles Times praised her for her accuracy of pitch, clarity of tone, and rhythmic care, saying “She is intense and forceful but never showy. I know of no violinist with a more sensitive nor respectful sense of vibrato, which allows her to let every note speak and none to over-speak.” The violin icon returns to Walt Disney Concert Hall for a solo recital.
