Join us for an unforgettable evening of classical music as Matthias Goerne, renowned baritone, and Evgeny Kissin, virtuoso pianist, come together to perform a selection of Schumann and Brahms Lieder. This exceptional concert is part of the Ibermúsica 2023-2024 season, specifically within the Serie Barbieri, and is set to take place on Tuesday, 19th March 2024, at 19:30h in the prestigious Auditorio Nacional de Música de Madrid.

The program for the evening includes a carefully curated selection of pieces:
- Schumann's "Abends am strande, op. 45 no. 3", "Es leuchtet meine liebe, op. 127 no. 3", "Mein wagen rollet langsam, op. 142 no. 4", and the beloved "Dichterliebe, op. 48".
- Brahms' "Lieder de poemas de Heinrich Heine" and "Lieder und gesänge, op. 32".

This concert promises to be a deep dive into the romantic era, showcasing the emotional depth and technical brilliance of both Goerne and Kissin. The BSO and Andris Nelsons complete their multi-season survey of Dmitri Shostakovich’s symphonies with No. 13, Babi Yar, based on poems by Yevgeny Yevteshenko. The title poem condemns Soviet revisionist history and antisemitism surrounding a Nazi massacre of Ukrainian Jews. The outstanding German bass-baritone Matthias Goerne is soloist. Opening the program, frequent BSO guest Augustin Hadelich plays Benjamin Britten’s early, lyrical and poignant Violin Concerto, the composer’s reaction to the tragedy of the Spanish Civil War.

Although Brahms was just 50 when he wrote his Third Symphony, he looked back to younger days with the musical quotation of the motto Frei aber froh (“Free but happy”). In the rising exclamation from the winds that open this great symphony, the F-A-F motif hits you immediately. The compactness of the work intensifies the dramatic aspects of his third and penultimate symphony. As you listen to this richly romantic piece, you get a real sense that Brahms had hit his stride as a composer.

A supple and expressive voice and the uncanny ability to tell stories through music have made Matthias Goerne a favorite of SF Performances audiences. The San Francisco Chronicle has reported on his seriousness and sensual allure, “probing each song for its emotional undercurrent, then bringing that vein to the surface in musical paragraphs of weightiness and simple elegance.” Seong-Jin Cho “is a master. He displayed an impressive variety of tonal colors and remarkable technique, dispatched with jaw-dropping panache” (The Wall Street Journal).

Legendary German baritone Matthias Goerne, one of the world’s most renowned Lieder singers, joined by internationally sought-after pianist Seong-jin Cho, perform a selection of songs by Wolf, Pfitner, and Strauss, and Wagner’s Wesendonck Lieder. Wagner once proclaimed “I have not written anything better than these songs and very few of my works will be remembered besides them.” While history has proved him wrong, the Wesendonck Lieder stands out as an absorbing document of Wagner’s complex relationships, revealing the composer in his most fragile mode.
