“As a young man I participated in an ensemble called the Gramercy Chamber Ensemble. It was a rather unwieldy group that had a full complement of strings, winds, brass, percussion, singers, and a pianist. We chose repertoire by consensus. When one of the members mentioned a work called Pierrot lunaire there were puzzled faces all around. When he described an orchestration consisting of flute-piccolo, violin-viola, clarinet-bass clarinet (each pair of these instruments played by one person), cello, piano, and a singer who did not really sing but performed a hybrid of singing and speaking on pitch, we were really perplexed.

The human voice, the most natural instrument, has inspired chamber music for centuries, bringing melodic beauty and the unique musicality of languages. This program celebrates the range and timbre of the voice as the ideal chamber collaborator. Music@Menlo debut artists include soprano Tony Arnold, “a luminary in the world of chamber music and art song” (Huffington Post), Met Opera mezzo-soprano Maire Therese Carmack, and baritone John Moore.

Let’s Add Voices!

This lively program highlights the wind quintet as a centerpiece of chamber music, akin to the string quartet in tonal balance, depth, and versatility. Enhanced by piano and string collaborations, these ensembles create a variety of rich, colorful soundscapes. In addition to familiar faces, renowned German clarinetist Sebastian Manz makes a Music@Menlo debut, alongside pianist Sahun Sam Hong.

Pianist and Dean of Yale School of Music José García-León, violinist Tai Murray, flutist Tara Helen O’Connor, double bassist Chelsea Strayer, and clarinetist David Shifrin are joined by the Yale Voxtet and the Callisto Quartet, Yale School of Music’s 2022-2024 fellowship quartet-in-residence. The program features music by Chausson, Pulitzer-prize winning faculty composer David Lang, and Yale composers Charles Ives and Quincy Porter

In a program celebrating the 100th anniversary of George Gershwin’s Rhapsody in Blue, Windscape will commission eight of MSM’s composition students to riff on the Rhapsody in a series of two-minute pieces for wind quintet.
