The Royal Conservatory of Music

Oberlin Baroque Ensemble is a Conservatory faculty ensemble. They will be performing in Fairchild Chapel. All members are part of the Historical Performance division. They are Edwin Huizinga ’06, violin, Michael Lynn, flute, Rebecca Landell Reed ’11, cello and viola da gamba, and Mark Edwards, harpsichord.

Fan favourite Edwin Huizinga returns to the Queen City with a king-sized line-up of music from Mozart and Haydn, as well as an overture from Joseph Bologne, Chevalier de Saint-Georges. This concert will also kick off our new Classics at Darke Hall series.

Nighttime in old Venice: music floating from cafés provided inspiration for composers from Claudio Monteverdi to Antonio Vivaldi. In our Venetian evening, dueling violinists set sparks flying in two Vivaldi double-concertos. Highlights from Monteverdi’s L’Orfeo and the famous Lamento della Ninfa remind us that love and betrayal often go hand in hand. The program culminates with a visit to the Jewish Ghetto of Venice – the scene of lively dances and the delightful Sephardic party-piece, Seven Ways to Cook Eggplant.

Four string musicians from our Baroque & Classical Academy Quartet perform Baroque and Classical masterworks.

This Festival Baroque & Classical Academy will provide training from internationally acclaimed Bach Festival musicians and learning opportunities at the Carmel Bach Festival. BCA musicians will have a full rehearsal schedule, including guided sessions with mentors, in preparation for the Baroque & Classical Academy Quartet Showcase Concert. Throughout July, BCA musicians will learn how to curate programs, create socially conscious programs, develop audiences, build donor relationships, and more. Musicians will attend educational workshops with Festival musician mentors, film composers, board members, and others to learn skills to help them succeed as professional classical musicians.

Edwin Huizinga, violin, and William Coulter, guitar, (Fire & Grace) return with special guest artists from their musical family, continuing their tradition of wildly popular, sold-out concerts with a program entitled “Pangea: One World.” This unique duo explores the connective musical elements of classical, folk, and contemporary traditions from around the world. Fire & Grace’s repertoire is vast, ranging from Bach to Vivaldi, tango to Celtic tunes, traditional Bulgarian to American fiddle tunes and waltzes, all played with a sense of discovery and commitment to the elements of passion and virtuosity — fire and grace — found in these diverse traditions.

Concertmaster Peter Hanson presents an evening of intimate musical conversations, including six Baroque favorites featuring multiple soloists ending with Pachelbel’s famous Canon in D.  “Think of this program as an evening of brilliant soloists trading melodic ideas in an extended dialogue,” said Peter Hanson.  The centerpiece of the program is Bach’s beautiful Concerto for Two Violins, performed by Peter Hanson and Cynthia Roberts, principal 2nd violin and one of America’s leading period instrument violinists. The “Bach Double” features a second movement that ranks as some of the composer’s most beautiful instrumental music.  Pachelbel’s Canon is joyful and mesmerizing. The piece presents three solo violins and continuo repeating the same bass line 28 times while the three solo violins perform a canon (or round) on top. The work’s harmonic progression has been used by countless pop stars, making Pachelbel’s piece one of the most influential to modern times from the Baroque era.  Other featured soloists with Peter Hanson include violinists Edwin Huizinga and Johanna Novom and principal oboist Gonzalo X. Ruiz.

Double Concertos

Fire & Grace & Ash (Edwin Huizinga, violin; William Coulter, guitar; Ashley Broder, mandolin) join forces with mezzo-soprano Kara Dugan in a compelling musical journey, taking the music of Johann Sebastian Bach as the starting point for a dynamic fusion of Baroque and folk, spanning the centuries from Vivaldi to the “father of bluegrass,” Bill Monroe! This concert promises to keep your foot tapping as you waltz home from a late night at the Festival!

Eventually all sound-streams lead to Bach, whose name in German literally does mean ‘stream’, the joining of cooperating currents flowing confidently and with force. Our all-transcriptions concert takes place in candlelight, while the metaphorical light we shine on familiar works is quite new. Expect to hear Bach with new ears. Perhaps the most famous Bach organ work, the D Minor Toccata and Fugue, known for more than 250 years as an organ work, is heard now as it might have been conceived, as a work for unaccompanied violin.
