The people are thirsty for blood. Another suitor for the hand of the sovereign is about to be publicly beheaded, because Princess Turandot is determined never to belong to any man. That’s why anyone who wants to marry her must first solve three riddles. Anyone who fails has to pay with his life. An unknown prince, revolted by Turandot’s cruelty, yet attracted by her beauty, takes on this potentially lethal risk – and solves the riddles. But has he awakened the ice-cold, man-murdering sovereign to love and put an end to her barbarity?

‘Magische Töne’ - the aria of Assad from the opera “Die Königin von Saba” by Karl Goldmark - is one of the evergreens of the tenor repertoire. On Jonas Kaufmann's tour, this title is the motto for a programme dedicated to famous works by Austro-Hungarian composers. In addition to Goldmark, these are above all Franz Lehár and Emmerich Kálmán, the two protagonists of the so-called ‘Silver Era’ of operetta. Together with the renowned Swedish soprano Malin Byström, Jonas Kaufmann invites the audience to immerse themselves in this special genre on this evening. Often derided as opera's ‘little sister’, operetta nevertheless captivates with a large portion of elegance, humour and bittersweet melancholy and often has the cheekiness to not take life too seriously without ever slipping completely into the banal. Accompanied by the Baden-Baden Philharmonic Orchestra under the baton of Jochen Rieder, Kaufmann and Byström present a varied programme of arias and duets from works such as ‘The Merry Widow’, ‘The Land of Smiles’, ‘Giuditta’, ‘The Csárdás Princess’ and ‘Countess Mariza’ in the Alte Oper. Powerful bars make it clear right from the start: «Tosca» is an operatic thriller about desire, betrayal, and abuse of power. With the title heroine, Puccini created a character who dedicated her entire life to the stage. Robert Carsen stages an enigmatic play about appearances and reality, theater and truth, while keeping pace with suspense-packed plot. Under the musical direction of Marco Armiliato, the dramatic triumvirate is made up of Sonya Yoncheva in the title role, Jonas Kaufmann as Cavaradossi, and Bryn Terfel in the role of Scarpia.

“The artist is a man, and he must write for men. … and you will see true hatred and its bitter fruit.” In the Pagliacci prologue, Tonio tells us what this opera is about – it seeks to put the reality of life on the stage. This applies for both works, which will now enjoy their first new staging at the Bayerische Staatsoper in 46 years (1978). Together Cavalleria rusticana by Pietro Mascagni and Pagliacci by Ruggero Leoncavallo simply exemplify verismo. The basic situation: A woman is unfaithful. Another reveals this to the husband, and he, spurred on by this woman, takes bloody revenge on the lover. Cavalleria rusticana is about Turiddu, who returns to find his old flame Lola again, but she is now married to the carter, Alfio. Turiddu then consoles himself by seducing Santuzza. But the old love is reignited, and Lola betrays her husband, and Turiddu his girlfriend. In Pagliacci, the plot revolves around Nedda and her husband Canio, the leader of a group of comedians. Nedda’s love for him has grown cold, so she turns to the farmer, Silvio.

Sounds of nature meet music of love: a festive Wagner evening featuring the glorious Good Friday Music from Parsifal and the second act of Tristan und Isolde. This Second Act is itself an opera within an opera: a never-ending love duet, performed here by a dream couple of Wagnerian singing, Jonas Kaufmann and Finnish soprano Camilla Nylund. And if you’ve always wondered why Wagner's music never seems to come to an end, it is clear from this love duet. Its enormous length allows the composer to explore the feeling of love like a landscape. The fact that Wagner's characters are heroes heightens our awareness of the armor they have to cast off.

Also, we get to see a stellar cast led by Wagner experts Camilla Nylund and Jonas Kaufmann, both currently scaling the peaks of their careers. Kaufmann, who dazzled audiences in the title role of Tannhäuser at the 2023 Salzburg Festival, had previously mesmerised the audience with the second act of Tristan und Isolde in concertante performances in Boston and New York’s Carnegie Hall in 2018. And he actually succeeds in doing so in a clever way: he is able to gradually convince Otello that his idol Desdemona is cheating on him. It is only after Otello has murdered his wife in a fit of hatred and jealousy that he realizes her innocence. Full of remorse, Otello stabs himself and, dying, bids farewell to his beloved dead wife with a kiss.

When Minnie falls in love with the bandit Johnson, the fragile order finally crumbles. In her production of Giacomo Puccini's Western opera, director Lydia Steier paints a picture of a community marked by isolation and violence, where the spiral of brutality turns relentlessly. Marco Armiliato conducts the richly textured score. Anja Kampe, Jonas Kaufmann, and Tomasz Konieczny star in the leading roles.
