This holiday season, think outside the Messiah and inside the Bach. The Orchestra of St. Luke’s presents the Christmas Oratorio under the baton of Principal Conductor Bernard Labadie, who brings to the evening not only his historical performance expertise, but his superb singers of La Chapelle de Québec. Bach’s festive oratorio features his famously demanding but stunning arias, sung by Lauren Snouffer, Avery Amereau, Andrew Haji, and Joshua Hopkins, reflective and moving chorales, and grand chorus movements with a royal complement of trumpets and timpani for a truly uplifting evening.

Mahler’s Fourth Symphony paints an uplifting picture of earthly afterlife, a child’s vison of heaven as a place filled with earthly delights and tuneful melodies. Here it is paired with a new work by composer Betsy Jolas, commissioned specifically as a companion piece to the Mahler symphony.

Rising young composer Gabriella Smith conjure the spaces and sounds of California, responding to landscapes both urban and rural, geographical and metaphysical. Igor Stravinsky depicts a festive, folk-inflected Slavic wedding in his ballet Les Noces, augmented by Steven Stucky’s orchestration and artist Hillary Leben's vivid new animated shorts. Stravinsky’s Octet for Winds and Brass, a uniquely scored neoclassical work, was inspired by a late-night dream.

The San Francisco Symphony writes: George Frideric Handel’s Messiah was an instant classic soon after its 1742 premiere and has been a holiday tradition around the world ever since. Through a dramatic series of arias, recitatives, and choruses, Handel offers a musical meditation on Christ’s birth, life, and resurrection—and his message of redemption. Masaaki Suzuki leads the SF Symphony and Chorus in this perennial favorite.

Composer, conductor, and creative thinker John Adams occupies a unique position in the world of music. His works stand out among contemporary classical compositions for their depth of expression, brilliance of sound, and the profoundly humanist nature of their themes. For his oratorio El Niño, Adams imagines a modern-day miracle, retelling the story of the Messiah through a constellation of references from medieval chant to contemporary Latin American poetry. “John Adams's nativity oratorio is a winner, a very palpable hit — an intelligent, emotional and sometimes magical re-telling of the old, old story from a new perspective” (BBC).

El Niño

The 2022–2023 Long Center Season opens in November with Rossini’s The Barber of Seville, a witty tale of bribery, deception, disguise, and of course, true love. With all the essential components of the best comic operas, Barber drops us into a forbidden love story between the rich-nobleman-disguised-as-poor-student Count Almaviva and the vivacious-but-orphaned Rosina, as they try to work out how to escape from the grasping hands of her cantankerous guardian, Dr. Bartolo. To solve the problem, in steps the wiliest of sidekicks, local barber and handyman Figaro, who plots and schemes with the young couple to make sure that true love triumphs in the end, though only after numerous mischievous escapades and near-misses.

Mahler’s passionate and tempestuous Second Symphony – about humanity’s search for meaning in life and death — is such a work.
