CMSFW was part of a group that commissioned Pierre Jalbert to compose a work, “Clarinet Quintet,” to be performed by the Dover Quartet and clarinetist Romie de Guise-Langlois. Lincoln Center Chamber Music Society, Arizona Friends of Chamber Music and Houston Chamber Music Society joined in the collaboration. This performance will be the first time it will be heard in the metroplex.

Dover Quartet collaborates with guest clarinetist Romie de Guise-Langlois (making her CMH debut) on a CMH-co-commissioned quintet titled Equilibrium by Rice composer Pierre Jalbert. One of Haydn’s milestone op.20 quartets and Mozart’s groundbreaking Clarinet Quintet bookend the evening’s repertoire respectively, both equally admired and beloved works.

Host Rob Kapilow and the clarinetist hailed as “extraordinary” by The New York Times explore the most famous clarinet concerto ever written. Composed just weeks before Mozart’s death at age 35, this exquisite piece is celebrated for its luminous melodies and emotional depth. A hallmark of Mozart’s late style, this soulful, technically demanding concerto helped legitimize the instrument, then still relatively new in the classical orchestra, as a featured solo voice.

This program begins with Dvořák’s Miniatures for Two Violins and Viola, a captivating suite of graceful, intimate pieces. Next is Mozart’s Clarinet Quintet in A Major, where the clarinet’s virtuosic passages and lyrical warmth blend beautifully with the strings. The evening closes with Weber’s Clarinet Quintet in B-flat Major, a lively showcase of the clarinet’s expressive power and brilliance.

This program mixes winds and piano in a variety of combinations, creating a kaleidoscope of instrumental colors. Sonatas by Saint-Saëns and Poulenc pair the piano with oboe and flute, and Taffanel’s quintet is a lively showcase for the winds. The concert begins with a Rossini wind quartet and concludes with Mozart’s inventive Quintet for Piano and Winds, a trove of extraordinary melodies, about which he said, “I myself consider it to be the best thing that I have written in my life.”

During the eighteenth century, divertimentos and serenades lived up to their names as pleasant “diversions” and musical gestures of affection. Often performed outdoors, the clear timbres of wind instruments could be perfectly heard. Inspired by the examples of Joseph Haydn and Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, composers that followed evolved a colorful tradition of chamber music for winds. Ludwig van Beethoven’s ingratiating Serenade, written for a unique ensemble combination, is essential listening for fans of the flute, and Béla Bartók’s bracing Contrasts, composed for the legendary bandleader Benny Goodman, thrills classical and jazz aficionados alike.

This concert is preceded by a free afternoon Prelude Performance at 5 p.m. by the 2022 International Program artists. Prelude programs will be announced in May.
