Associate Conductor Nathan Aspinall conducts our annual concert shining the spotlight on an up-and-coming pianist. The phenomenally gifted Janice Carissa takes the stage for Mozart’s Piano Concerto No. 17 — premiered in 1784 by one of Mozart’s rising star students. Anna Clyne’s This Midnight Hour, inspired by poetry, makes full use of the spectrum of colors in the orchestra. And Sergei Prokofiev’s Symphony No. 5 was penned at the height of WWII as “a hymn to free and happy Man…his pure and noble spirit.”

Since her debut with the Philadelphia Orchestra at age 16, Indonesian pianist Janice Carissa has gone on to study at Curtis Institute of Music with a full scholarship. She’s now undertaking her master’s degree at The Juilliard School, while playing at the world’s top concert halls with “the multicolored highlights of a mature pianist.” (Philadelphia Inquirer)

The WSO kicks off the 55th season with award-winning pianist Janice Carissa performing Rachmaninoff’s soaring, monumental Piano Concerto No. 2 . The evening opens with Khachaturian’s romantic ballet Adagio of Spartacus and Phrygia and Tchaikovsky’s dramatic tale of forbidden love – Romeo and Juliet Fantasy Overture. Recently, she has been named a 2022 Gilmore Young Artist. Janice’s program will include the Pathetique Sonata by Beethoven, the Liszt Spanish Rhapsody, the Prokofiev Sonata No. 8, and the very exciting late twentieth century piece entitled, “Winnsboro Cotton Mill Blues.”

A native of Shanghai, China, violinist Lun Li won First Prize in the 2021 Young Concert Artists Susan Wadsworth International Auditions, as well as The Paul A. Fish Memorial Prize and The Buffalo Chamber Music Society Prize, and was named John French Violin Chair at YCA. He is also the recent joint winner of First Prize at the Lillian and Maurice Barbash J.S. Bach Competition.

Indonesian pianist Janice Carissa has been praised for radiating “the multicolored highlights of a mature pianist” (Philadelphia Inquirer) and having a “fleet-fingered touch that is particularly impressive,” as well as for her artistry that “conveys a vivid story rather than a mere showpiece”.

Cellist Zlatomir Fung is on a roll—in 2019, he was the first American in four decades and the youngest musician ever to win First Prize in the cello division of the International Tchaikovsky Competition, and he followed that success with a 2020 Avery Fisher Career Grant. Fung lends his “refined playing…singing tone, pinpoint pitch and phrasing” (Aspen Times) to an eclectic and engaging program that matches cello showpieces by Beethoven and Dvořák with an arrangement of Ives songs and two contemporary works with distinctly American sensibilities. Judith Weir’s 1999 Unlocked is a set of five cello solos inspired by American folk songs in the Library of Congress collected by John and Alan Lomax in the 1930s, many of which were contributed by Black prisoners in Southern jails. And a masterful cello sonata by George Walker, the first Black composer to win a Pulitzer Prize for Music, combines complex rhythmic counterpoint with enthusiastic lyricism and rich blues sonorities.
