The theme of the fall concert is Night and Day: music Inspired by this night, and the dawn of a new day.  The spring concert features selections from Mozart's Requiem.

Mozart’s sublime Mass in C minor was, like his Requiem, left unfinished at the time of his death. Numerous scholars have published reconstructions of the work. The edition used for these concerts is a new completion by German musicologist Ulrich Leisinger, premiered in Germany in 2019.

Opening the program is Wolfgang Mozart’s charming Symphony No. 33, followed by Anna Thorvaldsdottir’s orchestrally imaginative Archora, inspired by the “primordial energy” of her homeland, Iceland. Closing the program, international star Hilary Hahn is soloist in one of the greatest works in the repertoire: Brahms’s Violin Concerto. Brahms composed this rich, lyrical work in 1878 for, and with the advice of, his friend Joseph Joachim, a towering virtuoso of the age.

Pianist Jeneba Kanneh-Mason, already “a deft and expressive soloist,” (The Guardian) makes her DSO debut with a concerto Mozart likely premiered himself. The program continues with a piece Ibert wrote for Mozart’s birthday and Villa-Lobos exploring the possibilities of Mozart’s themes through his Sinfonietta. Spinning stories into exquisite sounds, Ravel brings out the electric drama of fairy tales in Ma mère l'oye (Mother Goose).

As heard in 2001: A Space Odyssey, the famous ascending brass passage that opens Also sprach Zarathustra is just the tip of this orchestral iceberg. Lise de la Salle—“a musical thinker with charm, imagination and a dazzling technique” (The Washington Post)—performs Mozart’s elegant Piano Concerto No. 9.

The famous 40th Symphony by Mozart (1788) is widely recognized and has been used in advertising, film, and as a cellphone ringtone. It remains a masterpiece by the composer, featuring breathless rhythms and dark melodic lines that respond to the turbulent pre-Romanticism of the Enlightenment era. Jonathan Cohen, a specialist in early music, presents the first of Bach's six Brandenburg Concertos, composed in 1721 for the Margrave of Brandenburg. This work is influenced by French dance suites. Violinist Viktoria Mullova, making her debut at the OPRL, is considered one of the greatest interpreters of Johann Sebastian Bach in contemporary times, as described by The Guardian: "Hearing Mullova play Bach is simply one of the greatest things you can experience."

As the servant Leporello famously sings in his “Catalogue aria,” the eponymous fiend in Mozart’s sublime tragicomedy Don Giovanni has already been very busy when he beds the engaged Anna and then kills her father in a duel. Even as he’s pursued by aggrieved parties on all sides, Don Giovanni sets about seducing the lovely Zerlina—on her wedding day. But the arrogant Spanish antihero everyone loves to hate meets his comeuppance, and in director Kasper Holten’s brilliant production, his descent into hell is not literal but mental, as depicted by Luke Halls’s incredible projections onto Es Devlin’s magically minimalist set.

Così fan tutte means “so do they all,” with tutte (all) in the feminine. What is it that they all do? Don Alfonso, the cynical baritone who organizes the practical joke that forms the plot of the opera, thinks he knows what all women do: they are fickle. To prove his point, he persuades the heroes of the opera, Ferrando and Guglielmo, to leave their fiancées, return in disguise, and steal the hearts of Dorabella and Fiordiligi away from the men they are engaged to marry. But will they be true to their fiancées or will they be wooed away by the handsome “strangers”?

Mozart’s Don Giovanni, regarded by many as one of the greatest operas of all time, tells the centuries-old story of the libertine Don Juan.

Don Giovanni tries to seduce Donna Anna, which goes awry and he ends up killing her father, the Commendatore, unbeknownst to her. Donna Anna asks her fiancé, Don Ottavio, to avenge her father’s death. The opera follows Don Giovanni’s salacious escapades, aided and abetted by his servant Leporello. Giovanni makes his rounds seducing and duping numerous characters, bragging along the way and escaping accountability by obscuring his identity. In a cemetery, Giovanni meets the Commendatore’s statue, who forebodingly warns him that he will laugh no longer. When offered the chance to change his ways, will Don Giovanni repent?

Reflections on a legendary story. The 1720 Red Mendelssohn Stradivarius violin is said to be one of the world’s most legendary instruments. Its mysterious history and whereabouts after it went missing for 200 years, has inspired much speculation, and many tellings of its story, including the 1998, Academy Award winning film, The Red Violin. And the story of how it came into the hands of its current owner? It’s just as fascinating. Experience the genius of Mozart through the hands of Maxim Emelyanychev in the 2023/2024 season at Berwaldhallen. The Sveriges Radios Symfoniorkester (Swedish Radio Symphony Orchestra) is proud to present its principal guest conductor designate, Maxim Emelyanychev, in a special performance that promises to be a highlight of the musical year. Emelyanychev, not only a celebrated conductor but also a renowned soloist, will introduce himself to the Berwaldhallen audience by taking on the dual role of conductor and soloist in Mozart’s bright and jovial 23rd piano concerto. This performance is unique as Emelyanychev will lead from a hammer grand piano, an instrument typical of Mozart’s period, offering a historically informed and authentic sound.

The concert will take place on May 4, marking a significant event where Emelyanychev's expertise in early music and his interpretative finesse will be on full display. Following the intermission, the audience will be treated to Rimsky-Korsakov’s colorful fairy tale suite, Sheherazade, with Emelyanychev taking the podium to lead the orchestra in this evocative and dynamic composition.

In addition to the main program, attendees will have the opportunity to enjoy a bonus concert featuring Mozart’s own favorite composition, beginning shortly after the regular program concludes. This bonus performance promises to extend the evening’s enjoyment with more of Mozart’s exquisite music.

Baroque and Classical expert Jane Glover conducts this program spotlighting Mozart. Bookended by his Symphonies Nos. 35 and 39 — both full of gorgeous melodies from beginning to end — the concert features his buoyant Oboe Concerto performed by NY Phil Principal Oboe Liang Wang. Ah, perfido!, by Beethoven, one of Mozart’s most eminent heirs, is a dramatic showpiece for soprano, sung by Karen Slack.

The versatile Nikolaj Szeps-Znaider leads the CSO as soloist in Mozart’s richly melodic Violin Concerto No. 2 and Kreisler’s wistful Liebesleid. Trading violin bow for baton, Szeps-Znaider conducts Stravinsky’s Pulcinella Suite, a neoclassical gem that shines a spotlight on the orchestra’s principal players, and Mozart’s Prague Symphony, a work of grand gestures and profound, melodious depth.

The season finale opens with a piece by LSO Composer-In-Residence and a Piano Concerto featuring Gilmore Young Artist, Harmony Zhu. We close our 94th season with the sonorous and romantic Sergei Rachmaninoff’s Symphony No. 3 in A minor. For those who know the Second Symphony, this symphony delivers that and more in a slightly more compact package featuring only three movements, a format Rachmaninoff adopted from his successful Piano Concerti.

SPCO Artistic Partner Richard Egarr returns to escort us on a musical journey that contrasts darkness and light. The overture to Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s beloved opera, The Magic Flute, calls upon the power of truth, love and beauty to conquer the darkness while The Unanswered Question, Charles Ives’ riddle-like work, features a contemplative trumpet solo asking the “eternal question.” The Great Major C, Franz Schubert’s monumental symphony begins reverently before being enriched with many moments of ecstatic joy. Fans of brass will love this fanfare-filled program!

The opera was written by the composer two months before he died. The libretto, based on biography of the Roman emperor Titus, shows the dilemmas of the ruler - an internal tear between the duty resulting from the function performed and personal beliefs and feelings.

The performance was prepared by Maja Kleczewska, an appreciated and award-winning theater director who in her stagings is not afraid to pose difficult, and sometimes uncomfortable, questions about the present.

Under the direction of HSO Assistant Conductor, Adam Kerry Boyles, we welcome pianist and UCONN professor, Angelina Gadeliya, performing fellow UCONN Professor and Grammy® Award winner, Kenneth Fuchs’s Piano Concerto, “Spiritualist”-a piece inspired by three paintings of Helen Frankenthaler. His first numbered symphony, Prokofiev chose to compose his Classical Symphony without the aid of the piano and each movement is brief and to the point in the true “Classical” style. Mozart’s Overture to The Marriage of Figaro includes some of the most famous and hummable tunes in classical music and created a revival in the city of Prague for the composer.  It was there, in Prague, that his dramatic Symphony No. 38 was premiered, and it was considered a gift to the city.
