Our Autumn Opera Double Bill pairs Gian Carlo Menotti’s sparkling comic opera Amelia al ballo with Leonard Bernstein’s Trouble in Tahiti, a sharp, jazz-inflected portrait of suburban life and marital disconnection. At first glance, these two one-act works could not be more different. Look closer, and they are in an illuminating conversation.

Guildhall School of Music and Drama - Milton Court

Nur jedem das Seine (BWV 163) is the first of two cantatas composed in late 1715 for the court in Weimar, where Bach compiled the Brandenburg Concertos. (We will hear the second, Bereitet die Wege, bereitet die Bahn! (BWV 132), in December’s event.) At the time he was about a year into his employment there and the Court was just emerging from a period of mourning for Prince Johann Ernst, a keen and skilled musician. Speaking to the concerns of the court, the cantata takes as its inspiration the story of the Pharisees laying a trap for Jesus by questioning him about the legality of paying tax to Caesar.

This event sees the launch of Goethe: His Faustian Life (Bloomsbury Continuum), the new book by a leading literary figure of our time whose wide range has already taken in studies of Milton, Tolstoy, Dickens, CS Lewis and Iris Murdoch. A.N. Wilson now turns his attention to one of the giants of German literature and to what is surely Goethe’s greatest and most influential creation – known to music lovers from the innumerable song settings, operas, choral works and programmatic pieces it has inspired.

Joyful, radiant and dramatic - Britten's vision of the Christmas spirit.
Start your Christmas season with three festive masterpieces by Benjamin Britten, as we join forces with Ex Cathedra to mark his 50th anniversary. From the precocious A Boy was Born, written aged 19 and the much-loved A Ceremony of Carols, to the vivid storytelling of Saint Nicolas - this is an unmissable festive afternoon of music that glitters and endures.

Ex Cathedra: Britten at Christmas

Birmingham Town Hall

Johann Sebastian Bach was used to writing music for every celebration in the church’s calendar, but to mark Christmas in 1734, he surpassed even himself. Bach conceived an elaborate set of cantatas that would form a journey in music, from the birth of Christ to the adoration of the infant Jesus by the Magi. Bach’s Christmas Oratorio moves from frolicking trumpets, drums and choirs to touching arias, tremendous choruses, operatic ensembles and orchestral interludes. ‘There is no more life-giving, joy-enhancing experience in Bach’s music than a great performance of the Christmas Oratorio’ wrote the composer’s biographer Sir Nicholas Kenyon, words that these performances will set out to prove emphatically. Currently Kapellmeister at Vienna’s Volksoper, conductor Michael Papadopoulos joins the Orchestra with four esteemed vocal soloists and Oxford Philharmonic Choir.

The horn is one of the orchestra’s most recognisable voices — ancient, searching, capable of tenderness and fire in the same breath. Mozart’s Horn Concerto No. 4 is a pure delight. Written with warmth and mischief for a friend, it sparkles from first note to last. Britten’s Serenade draws on poetry united by the theme of night, the tenor voice and horn joining forces for a sound that is hauntingly beautiful. Brahms saved the best for last: hi Fourth, and final, Symphony. It builds to a conclusion of such bristling, defiant intensity it stops you in your tracks. Horn legend Stefa Dohr joins tenor Sebastian Hill and conductor Anna Handler for a night to remember.

Passionate, majestic and intense: join Ex Cathedra and the CBSO for Beethoven's most profound masterpiece.
Beethoven devoted four years to his monumental Missa solemnis. Passionate, majestic and intense, nothing he composed surpasses it for scale, sincerity or vision. A work Jeffrey Skidmore loves dearly, it will be a highlight of his final season – marking Beethoven’s bicentenary with music performed ‘from the heart that it may go to the heart’.
