Sergei Rachmaninoff’s towering Piano Concerto No. 2 opens with pulse-pounding passion, soothes you in the sentimental middle movement and sets you on the edge of your seat with its fiendishly difficult finale featuring the return of the sensational pianist Joyce Yang, a laureate of the Van Cliburn International Piano Competition. Guest conductor Lidiya Yankovskaya leads The Phoenix Symphony in Jessie Montgomery’s Hymn for Everyone, a meditation for orchestra full of washes of colors and timbre, and in Antonín Dvořák’s cheery and lyrical Symphony No. 8, inspired by the Bohemian folk music of his native land.

Chicago Opera Theater Music Director Lidiya Yankovskaya leads musicians from the CSO in a program highlighting composer-performers, including three-time Grammy Award-nominated violinist and composer Curtis Stewart. His stunning new violin concerto for string orchestra, Embrace, incorporates testimonies by members of the Chicago community while his work Of Love — a collection of compositions to cherish life, time and lifetimes — serves as a personal requiem. This program features two world premieres — an additional work by Stewart and a new work by CSO Mead Composer-in-Residence Jessie Montgomery.

In their ISO debuts, pianist Alexandra Dariescu and conductor Lidiya Yankovskaya perform legendary composer and pedagogue Nadia Boulanger’s newly-discovered Fantaisie variée, composed in 1912. Dariescu was the first pianist to perform this work in the United States. Yanlovskaya also leads music by Ukranian composer Mykola Lysenko and Tchaikovsky’s heart-wrenching Symphony  No. 6, “Pathétique.”

The Atlanta Symphony Orchestra welcomes the debut of Russian conductor Lidiya Yankovskaya, music director of the Chicago Opera Theater, as she leads the ASO in the suite from Prokofiev’s ballet masterpiece Romeo and Juliet. A work that brings out the full range of this virtuoso ensemble, the music moves from bellicose furor to aching poignancy with some white-knuckle violin playing in between. The concert includes Gabriela Lena Frank’s stirring Elegía Andina, a piece that mixes strains of Peruvian folk song with contemporary sounds to highlight the composer’s multicultural heritage. The program opens with Amjad Ali Khan’s Samaagam, featuring Khan, master of the sarod, and his family of acclaimed artists from the Indian classical music tradition.

Rusalka, a young water nymph, falls in love with a prince. The witch gives her a potion that will render her human but take away her voice. Rusalka risks everything for love and ends up paying dearly.

The company premiere of Dvořák’s Rusalka will be directed by the acclaimed Sir David Pountney whose vision is of a Freudian fairy tale set in a psychiatric hospital in Vienna. Led by conductor Lidiya Yankovskaya, Ailyn Pérez sings the title role. Robert Watson performs as the Prince and Mary Elizabeth Williams is the Foreign Princess, both in their company debuts.

Experience a suite from Rimsky-Korsakov’s penultimate stage work, The Legend of the Invisible City of Kitezh, a powerful symbol of cultural resilience in the face of oppression. Lost for several decades after it was written, Florence Price’s tone poem Ethiopia’s Shadow in America traces the historical experiences of enslaved Africans in America. The evening culminates with Tchaikovsky’s fiery Fourth Symphony, one of the most beloved symphonies of all time.

Exotic Peruvian rhythms flourish with passion in her “Elegía Andina,” which explores what it means to be of several ethnic persuasions and of several minds.

At the beginning of the 1930s, Orff produced a number of arrangements of early music. His researches in this area led to the creation of Carmina Burana. The texts come from a collection of earthy lyrics, discovered in a Bavarian monastery and dating from the twelfth and thirteenth centuries. It contains some 200 drinking songs and love lyrics. Orff saw in it the ideal vehicle to express basic human emotions.</p>
<p>This work is enormous in both force and sound creating an experience that is nothing short of spectacular.
