It 's Christmas Eve. Marie and Fritz Stahlbaum are excited. There's celebrating and dancing. Marie's eyes light up when her godfather gives her a nutcracker, which she immediately falls in love with. Fritz is delighted with a new squadron of hussars for his toy army, something he's longed for. But during the night, the toys come to life. Big, fat mice scurry through the room, and with a rumble, the Christmas tree begins to grow, and the nutcracker also awakens. Together with him, Marie enters the Land of Sweets, and a journey into wondrous worlds begins…

A Christmas classic: Tchaikovsky's music for the ballet "The Nutcracker." E.T.A. Hoffmann's story of a memorable Christmas Eve, where dream and reality merge, isn't danced, but narrated. When the toy soldiers march, the Sugar Plum Fairy begins to dance, the battle against the Mouse King rages, and Marie travels with the Nutcracker through the Sugar Plum Fairy's kingdom, the music begins and enchants the audience, not least thanks to the great linguistic artistry of the actor Wanja Mues, who is also well-known in Central Germany.

Beethoven chose E-flat major for his last piano concerto, the heroic key from his Eroica. This weighty classic, played here by the sensationally talented young pianist Justus Friedrich Eichorn from Weimar, who had already caused quite a stir, is correspondingly energetic, brilliant, and virtuosic. And before Hindemith sends his painterly hero from the time of the Peasants' War, who would later become the title character of his famous opera, through a turbulent life, cast in music and sadly too rarely heard, Mozart's Schürzenjäger takes the stage. The overture to "Don Giovanni" is a masterpiece in just a few minutes, a character study of the title character that is among the most artistic in operatic literature.
