The era of gallant court music, carriages and wigs, candlesticks and bold coattails: This is the era of the Bonn Court Orchestra, the Mannheim Court Orchestra, the Munich and Dresden Court Orchestras, but also the Court Orchestra of Oettingen-Wallerstein. Don't know where Oettingen-Wallerstein is? In the middle of nowhere, on the expansive plains of the Swabian Ries north of Augsburg, reigned a princely house that was one of the most magnificent and progressive courts of the 18th century and was a true magnet for talented musicians. Musicians who traveled throughout Europe and also came to Chur-Cölln.

In the meantime, Beethoven was not at all enthusiastic about the success of his Septet op. 20, which was premiered together with the First Symphony and the First Piano Concerto in 1800: The work for seven instruments, which followed Mozart's great Divertimento K. 563 in the same key exactly in its structure, was Beethoven's most popular work at the time and also his most frequently performed until around 1830. Beethoven probably felt that this septet, which was close to the light music of his time, blocked the view of his “serious” compositions! Today, we can consider ourselves fortunate to gain a glimpse of the humorous, the youthful and mercurial Beethoven through this 45-minute piece. Of course, as always with Beethoven, this does not preclude great depth and complexity: In the Adagio, the second and longest movement, time simply stops. We juxtapose Beethoven's work with similarly large-scale, generous chamber music: Namely, the rarely played Octet by Stuttgart-born August Walter – one of those pieces that makes one wonder, in the justice of music history, why this wonderful, brilliant, deeply felt great work was not known before?

Our musicians are not only first-class orchestra members, high-ranking soloists and enthusiastic chamber musicians: They are also part of the large network of musicians spanning all genres. Whether they make excursions into non-European music, like Hans Joachim Mohrmann, or help young musicians to get started, like Thomas Ludes: An orchestra is a nucleus for cultural and social activities, far beyond our own work! For example, there is the connection to the singers of the theater: when Thomas Ludes asked Marie Heeschen if she would like to do an evening with a wind quintet, she immediately and spontaneously agreed. Such a quintet as Solisti Bonna is a true musical chameleon that adapts to the circumstances and the partners and takes us into different musical realms with its countless colors. And so we can look forward to an evening with Marie Heeschen's bell-bright soprano voice and the virtuoso sounds of Solisti Bonna : In the first part with the tongue-in-cheek Paul Hindemith and some dazzling songs by Gustav Mahler, in the second part with pure romanticism: Briccialdi's quintet and the balmy airs breathing Les nuits d'ete by Hector Berlioz.

Lavish dinners, hearty village festivals, birthday parties, and weddings: this is what composers from Mozart's time wrote Harmoniemusik for. Large-scale works for woodwind ensembles with horns and double bass, which were equally effective in the ballroom, the threshing floor, or the village square. Once again, our musicians have chosen an entertaining genre that creates an almost orchestral splendor of sound on stage.
