Through the centuries, the trio ensemble structure has created opportunities for compositional ingenuity through its enormous musical range and variety of texture and color. These qualities come through in Haydn’s greatly admired Trio in E Major and the inspiring trios of Shostakovich and Mendelssohn in a program curated for the audiences at Wolf Trap and performed by three of chamber music’s greatest virtuosos.
